Never seen the Chan film, but undoubtedly the nod should be to Harold Lloyd’s Safety Last!.
That is true! I adore the musical, but being a book adaptation there is so much they couldn’t put in the musical. And nice details about the Students like the one you just mentioned is one of dozens. (One reason why I like the newest film so much is that they added and changed scenes to better reflect the book).
And Spirit is right, the clock scene is reference to Safety Last. I’m sure you’ve seen scenes of it, if you’ve seen Hugo. (If you haven’t, go see it!!!)
It’s interesting that you heard of Keaton from Chan. Because how I discovered Keaton was through another artist who I admired and who admired Keaton- animator Chuck Jones. I watched Keaton’s films off of his recommendation, and from there became a fan of silent film in general.
Thanks, LQ! The fact that it was a crossover was part of the reason why I decided to use it for a sig. Prior to this, I’ve pretty much only used Toy Story signatures, mainly because, as Pixar’s first film and Pixar’s most famous series, I felt it represented my overall love of Pixar the best. Then combining it with my Cars-related avvie made it all tie together, I could proclaim my love of Pixar in all forms, so I didn’t give the impression that I prefer one film or series over another (of course, hopefully having the words “Pixar now and forever” under the picture should hopefully get that point across). So having a few of Pixar’s biggest heroes all together was just perfect!
Thanks Spirit! I should dig up that film and watch the clock-tower scene, it’s been referenced so many times in various forms. The only silent films I’ve watched was Charlie Chaplin’s City Lights (I loved the idea of The Tramp trying to woo a blind girl by pretending to be rich) and Modern Times, and even then they were for Media Studies!
EJE: My previous employer saw it last year and she raved endlessly about it. I think Sacha Baron Cohen is in it as an evil train conductor? I only watched the trailer, so I know next to nothing about it.
And now that I think about Jones’ slapstick cartoons and Chan’s phsyical comedy, I can see the similarities! I gotta look this Keaton up.
OWP: I’m still in awe of that awesome crossover sig - Cool Guys Don’t Look At Explosions, haha!
I’m soooooooooooooooo in love with Eve04’s siggy right now!!! It’s even got the plant icon!
I love City Lights! It’s in my top three favourite films of all time, and my favourite silent. But overall, I prefer Keaton’s work to Chaplins. While you’re at it with Safety Last, check out Keaton’s The General and or Sherlock Jr. Those are my two favourites of his.
And see Hugo too! Sacha Baron Cohen’s character is like Javert from Les Miserables. Neither are evil at all! Just antagonists simply doing their job. (Both are inspectors too)
Alongside Chan and Jones’ work, lets not forget that Keaton and Chaplin were a major influence for the animators behind WALL-E.
That’s interesting, cos’ he’s also in Les Mis as that slimy inn keeper along with Helena Bonham Carter, who takes care of Colette - I mean, Cosette (but you already know that). I’ll be sure to check out Hugo!
Yeah, I remember reading that somewhere, did Stanton or some Pixarian actually say that?
…
Try to keep up, Vanellope! You can get my current animated sig from the official Wreck-It-Ralph site.
Our third Bond signature in a row!
Nice .gif, TDIT.
Thanks, SoA. You probably are aware Casino Royale is not only one of my fave Bond films of all-time, but fave films period, so kudos to you too!
I think Casino Royale may be my absolute favourite of the series, but I’m sometimes conflicted about making that definite choice.
Well, it’s certainly my favourite from the Craig canon (it sparked my interest to discover the older Bond films), although Skyfall is a very, very close second.
Are you working your way back in time through the Bond series?
Don’t know yet. That might become too long. Probably I’ll change airs for a while.
Hey, TDIT! Looking good in that Wreck-It Ralph sig! Hehe, Vanellope’s having to catch up with Ralph. I also like yours, Spirit! Clever how you did your username in the likes of Casino Royale.
I love Ballboi’s.
I ADORE both TDIT and SoA’s signatures right now! I like that the gif in TDIT’s is smooth looping.
Thanks, Leirin.
Yours is awesome and never gets old.
Hehehe, I did know that! I’m a huge Les Mis nut. Read the book, seen the musical multiple times, seen three of the movies…
And yep, wasn’t it in a behind the scene feature or interview that every Keaton and Chaplin movie was screened at Pixar for the animators and crew to watch.
As a fan of the Big Bang Theory, I really like LQstudiesPixar’s sig. Did you make it yourself?
Thank you, I quite enjoy the show myself. I must say I did not make the signature. I had a different one the day before (Justice League of America), but I realized it may have been too big for the size limit, so I searched the exact size limits it was asking for, and that’s the best picture that popped up. I think I like this one a little better than the one I had before, too.
The best part is that it says “The Geek Squad”
And Raj staring off into the distance.
