Wreck-It Ralph

[quote="thedriveintheatre"FUN FACT: If Wreck-It Ralph 2 is made for cinemas, it’ll be the first Disney animated theatrical sequel since the 1990 film The Rescuers Down Under.[/quote]
However, wouldn’t it be the first since Fantasia 2000? That’s technically a sequel. The only other two in the WDA canon are as you said Rescuers Down Under and Three Caballeros.

And what about our dear friend Winnie the Pooh, one of my favorites? So I think that’s four Disney cannon sequels: The Three Caballeros, The Rescuers Down Under, Fantasia 2000, and Winnie the Pooh. The rumored Wreck-It Ralph sequel, which I both suspected and am really eager for, shall then be the fifth Disney cannon sequel according to the rumors.

Getting the Blu-Ray today! Expect a second review coming soon.

Baliboi: Looking forward to it!

LQstudies and EJE: Well, I took it that those movies were more like reboots, not straight sequels that continue the plot of the first films in a sense. Although most people consider Casino Royale, Superman Returns and Batman Begins as sequels (as part of a franchise), though, so I suppose it’s a kinda grey area. And then there are spin-offs like Wolverine Origins and Puss In Boots.

OWP: Ooh, are you considering buying the digital version just to see this digital version of the magazine? I’m excited to see if they make a print version, it’d be interesting as it’ll appeal to both genders as opposed to Cars which is targeted at boys and Disney Princesses for girls.

Saw this on FB, oh my laaanddd…

But nothing new, I’ve seen Cars diapers before. 8D

Can I get your definition of a sequel and then your definition of a sequel?

I don’t think I’ll be getting the digital version of WIR for that, TDIT, but I seriously hope it’ll get made into a physical magazine. While Cars Magazine is very much a kids’ magazine (meaning that it’s mostly games, coloring pages, comics, and the like), it’s still really well done and fun to read! The WIR Magazine looks like it’ll be similar in form. I really really want to read the comics if nothing else…

Were you referring to TDIT and myself?

My definition of a sequel… and then my definition of a sequel? I take it you meant to ask that question once.

Well, in my opinion, a sequel is one that continues a storyline from its preceding film. So Shrek 2 is a sequel, The Dark Knight is a sequel, Batman Returns is a sequel. A reboot has no continuity with its predecessor, essentially restarting the franchise, like Casino Royale and Batman Begins. A remake is a film which reinterprets its predecessors, possibly with new storyline or characters, like Dredd for Judge Dredd. A prequel would be a film which takes place before its preceding film in the series, so Prometheus is a prequel to whatever the last Aliens film was. A spin-off would be a film which takes a character or element from its preceding film and spins a story around him/her, like Planes, a spin-off from Cars 2. Some fall into several of these categories: Puss In Boots, for example, is a spin-off and a prequel from its predecessor, Shrek 4.

Sorry, I’m starting to ramble! I answered more than your question! But, yeah, that’s just my understanding. One can say that Casino Royale is a sequel in the sense that it is a film in a long-running franchise, or that Planes is a sequel to Cars 2 because it’s from the same world and it (presumably) takes place after the events of Cars 2, et cetera. That’s up to them to define it.

Fantasia 2000 would be a remake of the original Fantasia, because both of them are anthologies of short stories, and 2000 had The Sorcerer’s Apprentice segment from the original Fantasia. 2000 did not “continue” a storyline of the original in a sense, because there is none (or rather, they are made up of many small stories). That’s just my take on things.

TDIT

I meant sequel and reboot, sorry about that. I think that the newest Winnie the Pooh is a reboot. And The rescuers film to be a sequel. I see Fantasia 2000 not as a reboot. Because that was Disney’s intentions from the beginning to have a Fantasia every decade. I’m not sure that ‘reboot’ is a correct word for it, but I wouldn’t necessarily say ‘sequel’ either. And same with the Package films. The Three Caballeros is a continuation of Saludos Amigos, and the argument can be made to with Melody Time to Make Mine Music. Because it’s really just picking up where they left off, not a ‘reboot’ persay.

Ah, I see. Sorry, I was just confused like TDIT about why you asked the question twice. Also, Melody Time is a follow-up to Make Mine Music? Huh. Did not know that.

Well, it seems like The Rescuers Down Under is the only, uh, one of these that everyone can agree is a sequel. I’ve heard people say that The Three Caballeros isn’t a real sequel since it only uses a few of the same characters but has different plots and themes, and the same goes for Melody Time. It sounds like not everyone thinks Fantasia 2000 is a sequel, though I can see where TDIT is coming from about it being like a reboot. It doesn’t continue any particular segment and even reuses one of the exact same segments. And Winnie the Pooh is a reboot, I guess. I suppose they’re not all sequels in the most technical terms. I think what I’m saying is, regardless of what each of these films “is”, I group them all together in a sequel-type category because only these ones continue a prior Disney film in some way or another. All five of them use characters (or theme for Melody Time) from a specific earlier Disney film in a new way with different stories, but the “rules” of each world still apply in the new movie.

Am I making any sense here?

Yes, RDU is indisputible as a sequel.

SA and TTC don’t really have a strong plot, or MT and MMM. So it’s not like they have “different” plots, they’re both super thin and can be summed up in a sentence(TTC-Donald Duck getting presents for his birthday. SA- Animators touring South America. MMM and MT-A collection of stories centered around music.)

But you could argue they’re sequels because what SA and TTC and then MT and MMM share is that they had the same goals. SA and TTC- Latin American Films to appeal to new Audiences. MT and MMM- Bind together shorts for a cheap Feature Film around the theme of music.

I love Wreck-It Ralph! Just finished watching it, and the Sugar Rush racers names are so creative, I made up my own XD

My favorites:
Starburst Honeytruffles
Jaffaranda Redwafer

Others:
Fudgella Cottoncream
Marzipan Twizzlepop
Karmen Caramellopop
Sour Appleblossom
Lucy Butterpattie

(I’ve adopted Starburst Honeytruffles as my own name lol)

^Awesome Bonanna! I love the SR names you came up with! I bet they’d look adorable too (though not as adorable as Vanellope, but you knew that  )! Think you might try and draw a couple? I have my own Racer too, Magikari Choconut. Posted a drawing of her in my Non-Pixar Art thread if you’re interested

I’m glad you love it, Bonanna! It instantly became one of my top favorite Disney films of all time! And I really like all of the Sugar Rush names you came up with it. I actually can’t chose a favorite. I like them all, really! I like Magikari Choconut as well, ObsessedWithPixar!

One name from the movie that I really liked was Minty Zaki. Gee, I wonder what inspired that name! Reminds me of that scene with the New York pigeon from Bolt:

“I gotta remember, it’s gonna kill me. Hold on…”

“No, I don’t know. I-I-I thought I knew”.

OWP, I love that name! And yes I will be drawing some XD LQ, Minty Zaki is a pretty epic name! And God I love that pigeon  I have adopted Starburst HoneyTruffles as my own personal char, heres a description I came up with of her:
Honey colored hair with white and black highlights, blue eyes, fair complexion, white hoodie with fluffy light brown fuzz around the hood and cuffs, honey colored skirt, white stockings with dark brown truffle icing pattern down the sides, black boots with honey fuzz around the top or black flats with fuzz ball on top.
I couldn’t decide on the shoes lol

^Love it. Can’t wait to see the drawings!

EJE: Oh man, gotta see if I can watch the films you mentioned, as it’s not entirely accurate to work on my definitions of what counts as a sequel without experiencing these films. I mean, I suppose I can Wikipedia it, but nothing like watching them myself!

Bonanna: Ooh ooh ooh you’ve watched Ralph, whaddya think? I mean, I know you love it, but I’m interested to hear what aspects you liked (or if there were any you didn’t).

SWEET MERCY, here come the WIR OCs! 8D

LQstudiesPixar: I just discovered this fact a few days ago, so it’s interesting to see you’ve learnt the same thing too! It’s nice to know that the Pixarians’ love for the “Japanese Walt Disney” (although sometimes he’s really in a class of his own) has spread to the Mouse House!

Love the Bolt reference, another wonderful (tear-inducing) Disney movie.

Lets see:
I thought the animation was beautiful. The message conveyed in the film really stood out to me. I adore the relationships in the film, especially the bond between Felix and Calhoun, I thought that was beautiful. The film shows raw emotion and I found it really touching. I LOVE the way they designed Game Central Station. My favorite part would have to be when we are first introduced to Heros Duty… Ugh I can’t explain it! Another Disney masterpeice in all! <3

Starburst sounds like an epic Racer, Bonanna! Her outfit sounds sooooo cute! Yeah TDIT, DisneyCreate has so many Sugar Rush OCs that we could make multiple games off them  Thanks for the compliments on Magikari, LQ and Bonanna! Her name was actually a little nod to a certain Pixar character mixed with the name of the Magic Cookie Bar

Aww thanks OWP! I’m in the process of drawing her buuuut, the hands are giving me some grief, and so is the fluffy hood XD I may redesign her as I draw but we’ll see. I’ll have to check out some of those OC’s on Go too!
