TDIT is a self confessed Cars fan. e-j-e likes Cars. Same with TSS, as far as I can tell. I don’t know little_chef a lot, so I can’t say if she likes it.
As for me, I’m also a Cars fan. It’s the weakest of the Pixar ones, but still a great movie. (Actually that’s a statement that says more about the enourmous quality of the other films than the lacks of Cars itself).
I haven’t seen Cars in quite a while, but I may do so soon in preparation of Cars 2. Maybe I can appreciate the movie a lot more now…
As for gear-grinding, you all know what also grinds my gears? There’s this supermarket here in Holland who are running a DreamWorks plushies campaign, you can get them by collecting points and stuff. I was like YAY! A chance to get a plush Toothless, but guess what? They didn’t have How To Train Your Dragon stuff at ALL! And all that while Toothless is the freaking cutest thing to ever come out of those studios… ugh! They even favored having a plush Shrek over Toothless! I mean really, if we’re talking about big, fat, and green, I’d much rather hug King K. Rool or General Klump, thank you very much. [size=60] /is still very much Donkey Kong Country fangirl[/size]
Oh, and I second that statement about the mods being great… hip! Hip! Hooray! For the mods! I appreciate the work you folks do around here. Even though this topic is kind of an awkward place to say so… I promise it’s not sarcasm, guys.
CarsLuvr and Spirit: While Cars is my least favorite movie, along with The Incredibles, it doesn’t mean I hate either film or think they’re horrible. I agree with Spirit’s statement about the former being one of Pixar’s weaker films, but that doesn’t mean I hold contempt against it or anything.
So, to say that most of the mods don’t like Cars would be making a statement without observation. Spirit explained that perfectly. If my assumptions are correct, CarsLuvr probably only said that because she knew I don’t like Cars as much as the other Pixar movies.
One thing that grinds my gears: people who think they have the right to treat others differently from the way they want to be treated.
I may have mentioned in the past that I founded another message board a while ago. Well, I’m having second thoughts over the co-founder being an admin, as she’s getting quite brutal towards another admin.
And here’s the part that gets me: what is the only obvious reason the person has for hating the other admin is jealousy over talent. The other night the co-founder went as far as to have another temper tantrum and accuse the other admin of plagiarism, something I failed to notice in their respective sketches.
Yet what’s holding me back is this: her tendency to bite others, so to speak, is only exaggerated with the other admin; she can snap at anyone if she wants to. Even when I first met the co-founder (before we founded this board), she was going as far as to claim that the fandom the board is dedicated to was a cult! In other words, if I give her any penalties for her behavior, it wouldn’t surprise me if she starts attacking me for little to no reason, too.
I have this problem all the time(the saying bad things, not the double posting). I say something I think I mean, then think on it, and come out looking and feeling like a big fat jerk. It’s depressing, and, incidentally, it grinds my gears! I’m such and idiot sometimes.
As Spirit has already mentioned, many mods like Cars. As a matter of fact, Cars was the Pixar Movie that lead to tdit falling in to Pixar fandom. (if I remember correctly).
I’m just clearing it up. It’s not like it’s a requirement to become a mod you have to dislike Cars. Defintely not.
Somethingguy: It’s alright, don’t beat up on yourself.
You guys summed it up better than I could. And yes, EJE, Cars was what made me turn me from a Pixar hater to a Pixar lover. I wrote about this remarkable paradigm shift at length here.
It’s not a requirement to like Cars either to be a Mod. Actually, should we really be concerned if some of the Mods in fact dislike Cars? As long as they are fans of Pixar, I think that should be sufficient.
Besides, what’s the big deal, if indeed this was true? It’s not like Mods will censor or oppress Cars fans, as that would be against forum rules. So really, even if all the Mods didn’t like Cars, or Toy Story, or Ratatouille, or Kung Fu Panda, or Rio, that wouldn’t bug me. As long as they don’t restrict my right to express my love for these movies, that’s all that matters.
I think we as fans should practise big-hearted love and not be insecure if someone doesn’t happen to like the same movies (or things) as us. As long as they don’t outright condemn anything without constructive criticism, I can live with that.
Thanks guys!
I’m so sorry to hear this, EJE. I’m really glad you had the courage to pull through.

You summed it up perfectly tdit. Besides, if we all had the same opinions, this place would be reeeaaallly boring! There’d be no constructive conversation! And yes, I’m glad too. I wouldn’t of lived to find Pixar Planet!
I’m not entirely sure what you mean by this statement, but no need to apologise if you know how to quote in the future.
I’m glad you share my opinion too. I find it strange how some people take things personally if you express a different opinion from them. What I usually try to do is to explain my side, and then give a good hard listen to the opposing view so I can pick holes in their arguments!
But at the end of the day, we can have a civil discussion and still be friends. Some folks think that just because you don’t agree with me =/= you don’t like me, but that it is usually far from the truth.
And depression, mental health, and suicide are very serious issues that shouldn’t be taken lightly. I’m so glad that the Oz government is allocating more funding for mental health treatment in yesterday’s Budget report!
…
Right now, what’s really grinding my gears will probably offend a few Cars fans, but I would like to assure you that I am looking forward to the sequel, this is merely a constructive criticism of the studio and not a ‘troll-bashing’, and that I still respect and admire Pixar.
Basically, I’m not a huge fan of their marketing campaign for Cars 2 at all. The trailers, while they hint at the action sequences and the emotional heart of Lightning ‘sticking up’ for Mater, are really corny and cheesy. Mr Lasseter promised us this will be a serious spy thriller, but I’m not getting any of that from the way the trailers are edited. I’m really getting tired of seeing the Mater bidet joke and the septic tank gag after seeing the trailer in front of both times I went to see Rio.
I’m also not impressed with the way they are plugging every two days with a release of a character turntable with simple animation or a wallpaper. It’s great that we get a taste of the characters without any spoilers, but do you really have to show us a Zen Master who will appear for only two seconds as a gag, or [spoil]Lewis Hamilton[/spoil], who at most will probably have a line or two? I’d rather discover the cameos for myself like I did with the first movie. Yes, I can ignore the campaign or ‘turn off my computer’, but it’s just that this is extremely uncharacteristic of Pixar to have to hog the headlines so far ahead of its release.
Pixar really needs to practise quiet confidence and subtlety in its marketing campaign, and introduce more variety in the form of character posters (which they’re now starting to produce, good job), interviews, or non-spoiler featurettes like they did with their previous movies pre-Toy Story 3.
I’m still holding out for tomorrow’s trailer. They’d better make it every bit the dark, exciting, and dangerously thrilling spy film I’m imagining it to be, and not the two-bit Austin-Powers/Get-Smart parody that they’re presenting at the moment.
THANK YOU. I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s thought this, watching the trailers was like watching cheese and corn. They were a bit tacky. And I agree, the turntables are getting out of hand.
ia completely with both of you. i’m not too fond of the whole marketing campaign, especially the character turntables. i mean, i’ve really got nothing against promoting a little, but having turntables for what seems to be a whole lot of /very/ minor characters? no.
asjfkls; i really hope they don’t promote brave like this.
Thanks guys, I was really starting to wonder if I was the only one who felt that way about the campaign.
Yes, yes, yes, I agree. I can understand some of the die-hard fans will be thrilled to see ‘a character a day’, but to me, it feels like Pixar is acting like a ‘Hermoine Granger’ and trying to ‘bump’ their thread to the top of a board. If they kept this to their website and Youtube channel, it would’ve been more professional.
Of course, maybe other sites just happen to pick up on the videos and plug it for them. But as I’ve said in the ‘Central Cars 2 discussion’ thread, Pixar should really focus on its key characters instead of dragging out every single minor two-bit character.
And the trailers… the latest one is a marked improvement, but I’m still disappointed they didn’t give it the James Bond or serious-spy-movie treatment. I expected a darker and edgier tone like the ‘Casino Royale’, ‘Quantum of Solace’ or ‘The World is not Enough’ trailers, but I’m still getting cheerful background music and Mater acting cute all over the place. The only good thing about the latest trailer was [spoil]Mater’s epiphany that maybe he wasn’t cut out to be a spy three-quarter way through the trailer when Finn explains that he thinks Mater’s ‘dumbness’ is an act.[/spoil] Even the teaser with ‘Trouble’ had a better spy theme. And unfortunately, no Giachinno music as far as I can tell.
Again, if Lasseter hadn’t made that promise that “this is not a spoof, this is a serious spy movie”, then maybe I wouldn’t have such high expectations. But the fact that he threw down the gauntlet and said “we are totally serious about this” means I’ll be expecting a dangerous world where not everyone survives, you can’t trust your allies, cloak-and-dagger antics, etc.
In the real world of covert espionage, henchmen aren’t stupid. They don’t fall into septic tanks (most of the time). The villain doesn’t play fair. I want to see that kind of stuff in Cars 2, but the trailers are not giving me confidence.
Oh, for the love of Chrysler, I hope not!
Please, Pixar, I’m praying you will prove me wrong and deliver a true spy movie, not some cheap Austin-Powers wannabe.
It annoys me when people(especially the creators) over hype a movie as well as you guys. But, lucky me, I’ve dodged nearly all the Cars news! If this keeps up, I might know anything of substance until after seeing it.
I’m doing my best to keep myself news-free for the next Cars movie. And the way I do that is by avoiding the Cars section of Pixar Planet until I see the movie.
