New ‘Cars’ Short Will Kick Off Second ‘Cars Toons’ Series

Cars, Cars Toons, Pixar Canada, Short Film

Posted by Brkyo614 • March 14, 2014

Pixar certainly hasn’t held back on producing Cars Toons – they’ve put out enough to warrant a separate DVD release – but, for the most part, those shorts have been based entirely around Mater’s fanciful adventures. Last year’s Tales from Radiator Springs mini-shorts shifted the focus to the larger cast of characters; now, Pixar is expanding them to a full-fledged series of short films, beginning with The Radiator Springs 500 ½.

Directed by Rob Gibbs and Scott Morse, the first six-minute short will debut this spring exclusively on Disney Movies Anywhere, a new streaming service for Disney, Pixar, and Marvel titles. Here’s the synopsis:

A “leisurely drive” planned in honor of Radiator Springs’ town founder, Stanley, turns precarious as Baja pros descend on the town and challenge Lightning McQueen to an off-road race. Meanwhile, the townsfolk, led by a Stanley-costumed Mater, enjoy the planned “leisurely drive” to retrace Stanley’s original frontier route. Thinking they’re on the same course, a wrong turn sends McQueen and the Baja pros on a treacherously wild bid for survival. The misunderstanding leaves the racing professionals in awe of the “legend” of Stanley: the Original Off-Road Racer.

It’s worth noting that this is the final short to be produced in full at Pixar Canada. Entertainment Weekly notes that a second short in the Tales from Radiator Springs series will follow in 2015.

D23 Expo Round-Up: ‘Toy Story of Terror’, New Cars Toons on the Way

Cars, Cars Toons, Round-Ups, Short Film, Toy Story, Toy Story of Terror!, Toy Story Toons

Posted by Brkyo614 • August 11, 2013

Pixar had a strong feature film showing at this year’s D23 Expo, but that doesn’t mean they neglected their short-form lineup. In addition to revealing the Monsters University short Party Central, the studio shared new details on the upcoming Toy Story of Terror and teased a new pair of Cars shorts.

On Friday, Pixar concluded their segment of Disney’s animation panel by showcasing the first ten minutes of Toy Story of Terror (read a full synopsis over at /Film). Director Angus MacLane and Pixar general manager Jim Morris then shared more at a short-centric panel the following day, describing Terror as the studio’s "first horror film" while still remaining "accessible to everyone." Over the weekend, Variety also dropped an October 16 premiere date for the half-hour special.

At the same panel, frequent Cars Toons director Rob Gibbs also took the chance to reveal two new entries in the series: Radiator Springs 500 1/2 and To Protect and Serve. Both will arrive next year on Disney Channel.

With Party Central attached to The Good Dinosaur in 2014, it looks like it’ll be a while before we see another wholly original Pixar short. Still, Pixar’s franchise shorts continue to act as fun windows into worlds we already know and love.

Watch: Three New ‘Cars’ Mini-Shorts!

Cars, Cars Toons, Short Film

Posted by Brkyo614 • March 24, 2013

To accompany last Friday’s Disney Channel screening of Up, Disney also aired three brand new Cars shorts. In case you weren’t able to catch them, they’ve just been posted on the Disney website for your viewing pleasure.

Much like the vignettes often released ahead of the latest Pixar movie, these "shorty shorts" clock in at a quick 90 seconds or less. Each was directed by Jeremy Lasky (a frequent director of photography for Pixar) and produced over at Pixar Canada. Watch Hiccups below, and check out Bugged and Spinning at those respective links.

In my opinion, the Cars universe really shines in short form; it allows just enough time with the one-off characters that they don’t overstay their welcome.

Woody’s News Round-up! [10/28/11]

Cars Toons, Round-Ups, The Incredibles, Toy Story

Posted by Martin • October 28, 2011

Woody’s News Round-up is back with three new Pixar stories from all over the ‘net!

New Air Mater Stills: Air Mater, the first production from Pixar Canada, is set to premiere this Tuesday with Cars 2 on DVD and Blu-ray. The German Pixar Blog has obtained several stills from the upcoming ‘Cars Toons’ short that takes Mater to new heights. We’ve included a few of those images in this post. More shots and an interview with director Rob Gibbs can be found here.

Book Chronicles Toy Story Series: A brand new book from Disney Editions, set to recount the tale behind the Toy Story series, was recently listed for pre-order on Amazon. Written by Charles Solomon (The Art of Toy Story 3), The Toy Story Films: An Animated Journey is scheduled to hit stores on August 7, 2012. The book’s description implies that this 192-page volume will be the most comprehensive account of the ‘trials, tribulations and triumphs’ met during the 20+ year history of Pixar’s iconic and beloved film series.
Bird Talks The Incredibles 2: To many fans, the best suited Pixar film (no pun intended) for a sequel seems painfully obvious. The Incredibles writer and director, Brad Bird, is open to the possibility in a new interview with Movies.com, however he hasn’t been actively pursuing the idea. "I think the reason it hasn’t [happened] yet is because the studio would like me to do it… And I’ve told them that I’m not really friendly to have someone else take away my child… I would like to think that I have several good ideas that could be incorporated into a next Incredibles, but I don’t have a whole movie yet, and the last thing I want to do is do it just because it would open big, or something like that.” On a related note, Bird’s live-action debut, Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol, opens December 21 in the US.

Mater’s Tall Tales Blu-ray: Special Features Revealed!

Cars Toons

Posted by Martin • August 16, 2010

We couldn’t help but get excited when the Blu-ray release of Mater’s Tall Tales was first announced —

— unfortunately, such a minimal number of reported special features was pretty underwhelming. Now, Stitch Kingdom has the full list of bonus content. Clearly there’s a lot more to look forward to other than the nine hilarious shorts:

• Paths To Pixar
• Studio Stories – McQueen Has No Hands
• Mater Bumper-to-Bumper
• Making Mater’s Tall Tales
• Unmade Tales – Intro by Rob Gibbs
• Cars Toons Story Reels
• Cars Land Sneak Peek
• Mater Private Eye Trailer

Highlights: Could "Mater Private Eye Trailer" be our first sneak peek at Cars 2? Maybe it’s directly tied in to one of the exclusive shorts, but you never know… New editions of "Paths to Pixar" and "Studio Stories" (first seen on the Toy Story Blu-ray releases) will also be included.

Related: A video game adaptation of the short series, also titled Mater’s Tall Tales, hits the Wii on September 14th. The shorts are also set to be collected into a storybook, Mater’s Treasury of Tall Tales, by January of 2011.

Cars Toon: Mater’s Tall Tales hits store shelves on November 2nd, 2010. Two new shorts, Mater P.I. and Moon Mater, premiere in the Blu-ray + DVD release. Please check out our earlier post for further details.

What are you looking forward to the most from Mater’s Tall Tales on Blu-ray?

Mater’s Tall Tales Races Onto Blu-ray/DVD on November 2nd!

Cars Toons

Posted by Martin • August 13, 2010

Mater’s Tall Tales, a collection of Cars Toons, is set to debut on November 2nd, 2010!

DVDizzy has the latest details and cover art (seen right) from the upcoming compilation. The Blu-ray (and DVD) will include nine short films starring the rusty-but-trusty tow truck — two of which are brand new and exclusive to this release!

The never-before-seen shorts are titled "Mater, P.I." and "Moon Mater." A documentary featurette, "Unmade Tall Tales", will also be included along with a sneak peek at the upcoming Cars Land attraction at Disney’s California Adventure.

Speaking of all things "upcoming", it makes me wonder why Disney/Pixar decided to release Mater’s Tall Tales with Toy Story 3. Wouldn’t it be perfect to hold it off until next Spring in anticipation for Cars 2? By the way, Finding Nemo has been pushed out, but we may see its HD debut in less than a year.

Mater’s Tall Tales hits stores on the same day as Toy Story 3. Fans will have the option to purchase a Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack (SRP $29.99) or a stand-alone DVD (SRP $26.99). Pre-orders are available now.

Keep it here for the latest Blu-ray news. More good stuff coming up!
