Pixar’s Josh Hollander Talks ‘Incredibles’ 3D, ‘Ratatouille’ 3D, and More

Over the last few years, Pixar has welcomed the revival of 3D with open arms. In addition to releasing all of their features since Up in 3D, they’ve rolled out 3D theatrical re-releases of Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Finding Nemo, and Monsters, Inc. At this month’s 3D Creative Summit, Pixar’s director of 3D production Josh Hollander shared insight into the studio’s approach to the format and discussed their future 3D plans.

According to Hollander, the studio is hard at work developing 3D versions of The Incredibles and Ratatouille. He notes that "[they’re] trying to figure out exactly what the release strategy for that will be," so whether these will be full-fledged theatrical releases or just 3D Blu-rays (like Cars 3D) is unclear.

In addition, Hollander also hinted at what to expect from next year’s Inside Out in 3D:

"The movie is just pure magic […] We’re looking at how translucency and opacity is used, which plays really well in 3D. There’s not much more I can share about it but it will build upon our use of 3D, supporting ‘emotions’ and emotional moments."

For those interested in where Pixar could go after 3D, with projection techniques like high frame rate, 4K resolution, and HDR imaging on the rise, Hollander had this to share:

"Of those, the High Dynamic Range seems most interesting to us because there are entire worlds of colour that we’ve not been able to show you and not be able to represent in our films because of the limited colour space of the display technologies. 4K is also interesting to us – that added clarity. High Frame Rate isn’t something we’ve been digging into yet, we’re doing some testing but it’s not banging down our door and begging for us to use it right now."

Ed Catmull Details ‘Inside Out’ Story Meeting in ‘Creativity, Inc.’ Preview

Late last year, Pixar head Ed Catmull announced plans to publish Creativity, Inc., a business-oriented look at his leadership strategies at the studio. With its release soon approaching, Catmull has published an excerpt from the book at Fast Company with some surprising insight into the creative process behind the studio’s next film.

The full article is a must-read, but a key section examines a Brain Trust meeting during the early stages of Inside Out‘s development. Early reactions were enthusiastic, but the group was concerned with the execution of one key scene: "an argument between two characters about why certain memories fade while others burn bright forever." Brad Bird was the first to chime in:

"I understand that you want to keep this simple and relatable," he told [director Pete Docter], "but I think we need something that your audience can get a little more invested in."

Andrew Stanton followed, as Catmull explains:

"I think you need to spend more time settling on the rules of your imagined world," [Stanton] said. […] In Pete’s film, one of the rules—at least at this point—was that memories (depicted as glowing glass globes) were stored in the brain by traveling through a maze of chutes into a kind of archive. When retrieved or remembered, they’d roll back down another tangle of chutes, like bowling balls being returned to bowlers at the alley.

That construct was elegant and effective, but Andrew suggested that another rule needed to be clarified: how memories and emotions change over time, as the brain gets older. This was the moment in the film, Andrew said, to establish some key themes. Listening to this, I remembered how in Toy Story 2, the addition of Wheezy helped establish the idea that damaged toys could be discarded, left to sit, unloved, on the shelf. Andrew felt there was a similar opportunity here. "Pete, this movie is about the inevitability of change," he said. "And of growing up."

This set Brad off. "A lot of us in this room have not grown up—and I mean that in the best way," he said. "The conundrum is how to become mature and become reliable while at the same time preserving your childlike wonder. People have come up to me many times, as I’m sure has happened to many people in this room, and said, ‘Gee, I wish I could be creative like you. That would be something, to be able to draw.’ But I believe that everyone begins with the ability to draw. Kids are instinctively there. But a lot of them unlearn it. Or people tell them they can’t or it’s impractical. So yes, kids have to grow up, but maybe there’s a way to suggest that they could be better off if they held on to some of their childish ideas."

While news on the feature film front has been quiet, there are a few Pixar-related stories from the past few weeks that are worth mentioning. Enjoy:

Andrew Stanton Featured in Google Oscar Ad: Pixar may not have been present at this year’s Oscar ceremony, but some of the studio’s magic still managed to creep into last Sunday’s broadcast. Google premiered a great 60-second spot with sound bites from Finding Nemo director Andrew Stanton’s 2012 TED Talk, set to Thomas Newman’s Nemo score. (Thanks to Pixar Post for the embed.)

New Pixar Posters from Mondo to be Showcased This Week: Disney has worked with Mondo to release some impressive Pixar posters in the past, and that collaboration is set to continue. Mondo is exhibiting a collection of Disney/Pixar-inspired posters at the South By Southwest film festival from March 7 through March 11. Tom Whalen shared a peek at his Incredibles poster for the gallery; to see Kevin Tong’s Up and WALL-E prints, head over to Oh My Disney.

Ratatouille Ride Updates: A Ratatouille attraction for Disneyland Paris has been in the works for a while, and the first concrete details have begun to emerge. Disney’s Tom Fitzgerald presented a first look at the attraction, titled Ratatouille: L’Aventure Totalement Toquée de Rémy, earlier this month. Inside Out Updates: Pixar’s next film is still more than a year off, but production on it is already well underway. Pixar recently shared a photo of Mindy Kaling recording dialogue for the film on Instagram, and Pixarians have begun to voice their enthusiasm about the project on Twitter. Hopefully we’ll get a teaser trailer within the next few months!

D23 Expo Round-Up: ‘Inside Out’ Insight and Casting Announcements

Following a Good Dinosaur info blowout, Pixar continued on at today’s Animation at Walt Disney Studios D23 panel to reveal more on Inside Out, the first of two Pixar films planned for 2015. In addition to voice cast reveals, director Pete Docter and producer Jonas Rivera delved further into the film’s story.

As previously announced, Inside Out follows a young girl and the emotions churning inside her mind. Now we know that this girl’s name is Riley, and she’s forced out of her comfort zone when her family moves away from their familiar Minnesota hometown and into San Francisco.

As she faces this new environment, the film explores her emotions and how they react. Amy Poehler voices Joy, the leader of the group; Lewis Black is Anger, Bill Hader is Fear, Mindy Kaling is Disgust, and Phyllis Smith is Sadness. They all work in tandem at a headquarters of sorts, watching Riley’s POV on a screen, adjusting her emotions, and storing her memories. Other areas of the mind, including Dream Production, Long-Term Memory, and Imaginationland, are connected to the headquarters by a literal Train of Thought.

Things go awry when Joy and Sadness are forced out of the headquarters, leaving Anger, Fear, and Disgust to operate Riley. An extended sequence showed the trio struggling with this task as Riley interacts with her parents. Turns out we don’t just see inside Riley’s mind; her mother and father also have unique groups of emotions. The three teams play off of each other in a fast-paced dinner table scene that got a ton of laughs at the D23 panel.

It’s tough to visualize all of this, but Inside Out seems like the most creative idea from Pixar in a long while. I’m definitely excited to hear more as its June 2015 release approaches.

Pete Docter Reveals New ‘Inside Out’ Details

I’ve been eagerly looking forward to Pete Docter’s Inside Out since it was first announced; the unique concept combined with Docter’s emotional touch seems like a sure-fire recipe for success. But in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Docter revealed how his newest project is also his most challenging.

So what sets it apart the most from Monsters, Inc. and Up? Having to tell two parallel stories. The plot revolves around both the life of a young girl and how her personified emotions respond to it — an ambitious balancing act that has been challenging for Docter and the Pixar story team. "One story is hard enough. This is two stories that need to talk to each other,"Docter explained.

Visually, the film is also set to break new ground for Pixar. Last year’s early concept art (top right) showed a set of simple, cartoony characters, but Docter suggested that the final film may look very different: "The characters are created with this energy because we are trying to represent what emotions would look like. They are made up of particles that actually move. Instead of being skin and solid, it is a massive collection of energy."

Inside Out won’t be in theaters until June 2015, but it’s very possible that we’ll hear more about it at the D23 Expo in a few weeks (alongside news on The Good Dinosaur).

Pete Docter’s Next Film Officially Titled!

Of all the Pixar productions in the making, by far the one that excites me the most is Pete Docter’s story about the emotions within a young girl’s mind. Its release is still a few years off, but reports that the film’s title has been confirmed by Disney: Inside Out!

Nearly identical to the previously rumored The Inside Out, the title succinctly and smartly conveys the film’s premise. Read the synopsis of the June 2015 release below:

Pixar takes audiences on incredible journeys into extraordinary worlds: from the darkest depths of the ocean to the top of the tepui mountains in South America; from the fictional metropolis of Monstropolis to a futuristic fantasy of outer space. From director Pete Docter (Up, Monsters, Inc.) and producer Jonas Rivera (Up), the inventive new film will take you to a place that everyone knows, but no one has ever seen: the world inside the human mind.
