First you cancel Newt and then you tease us with stunning artwork? Oh, Pixar!
In an unexpected move, 29 pieces of concept art from Gary Rydstrom’s amphibian project were released on Disney/Pixar’s official Facebook fanpage. As we’ve come to expect from the studio, everything looks gorgeous.
On one hand, you have to trust that Pixar shelved the project with good reason… but just look at that art! How could they resist? Today’s big reveal covers all the bases; you’ll see the title character with Brooke as well as a group of scientists and sidekicks.
Honestly, I never thought Pixar would ever mention Newt again, but I’m definitely not complaining. If anything, we’ll have a better idea of how the movie might have played out.

Are you stunned or what?

I’m just so sad about this cancellation. This film was the one film as soon as I saw the title I said, this will be a hit! Now they release the pictures and I’m almost about to burst into tears, it looks so freaking good! Why oh why did they have to cancel it?! This would’ve been a beautiful film. More then beautiful. It would’ve been a classic, from the start. These pictures just confirms this.
I don’t even know what to say about this. I’m just… absolutely stunned. It’s some of the most beautiful and inspiring concept art I’ve ever seen from Pixar, and that’s really saying something. I know what they did was for the best, but… I can’t help but think it looked like they had such a perfect vision for the story.
Actually I’m glad it’s canceled! It’s so predictable and unoriginal. How un-Pixar can you get?
Although I will agree the artwork is quite good…but the plot is…appalling.
I’d have to agree with you. The pictures look great but when I heard the story, It seemed a little weird. (Not trying to sound rude) I just hope they try making it again.
….You know, this actually makes me feel better about the cancellation. As pretty as the art is, it feels too scattered; it’s hard to get a sense of story from this.
Netbug – you can’t judge how a story would have turned out just from concept art. Concept art is all about throwing out all ideas out there without any editing or anything. I’m sure all your favorite Pixar movies would have looked scattered if all you judged them by was the concept art.
Let’s consider this. This is Pixar, the people who have made 11 massively successful hits, the people who make films that are consistently the best reviewed of the year, the people that took a movie that was having production problems, started over from scratch with less than a year left to go and created a sequel which was better than the first.
Consider all that and it should be painfully obvious that this film wasn’t going to work. I’m sure that Pixar would not have cancelled the project if they thought there was anything that could be done to salvage it. Yes, the concept art is beautiful but concept art is almost always better than the real thing. Perhaps the foundations of Newt will eventually be used to create something fantastic, but as it was Newt was not going to work.
Fact is, none of us were involved in the development process so we can’t reasonably say “oh man, this was going to be great, you shouldn’t have cancelled it.” Remember who we’re talking about here, these guys know what they’re doing, so it’s foolish not to trust them in this decision. Stop mourning over the cancellation of a project that wasn’t going to work and instead get excited for what they currently have on the way.
I loved the picture of the Car that Newt’s in front of. Looking at that picture made me guess what was going on like Brooke got captured or something and Newt is racing to save her.
I absolutely loved the concept art that they posted. But, like others, when I heard the plot, I wasn’t quite sure what the movie would be like. But it did not sound interesting to me at all. As beautiful as the art is, Pixar knows what they’re doing. They had a reason for cancelling the project, and like someone else already said. Let’s look forward to the many great works that they’ll produce in the future!
I am indeed stunned.
I agree that Pixar must’ve had a reason for canceling the movie. However, I still hope this beautiful concept art reappears somehow for a new project!
More than anything else, I’m just surprised that the project was that far along. I don’t know what I expected, but it seemed to be pretty well thought out already.
Why did Pixar have to cancel this and then send awesome pictures of it? The “Newt Crossing” sign was in Toy Story 3 so they have to make it.

really???
IllusionOfLife, you’re last paragraph is really the best way to sum it up. But remember guys, films like Rio and Alpha and Omega are also coming out in a similar time frame that newt was schedualed for, which we can assume was part of the reason for it’s cancellation. Remember, it’s Pixar, people, so they must’ve had a good reason to cancel something this far in production.
Reminds me of all the concept art that Disney stored in their vaults over the years but never made it to the finish line.
And as some have said: a good visual needs a good idea behind it. I came up with a cool concept for a project of my own. The art and design got me real excited, but without a unique story to make it work, I’ve shelved it for now.
Oh my gosh, that is Awesome! Newt would have been a great film. I’ve heard that the film had production problems.
Hello I’m having troble getting in to the site. Sorry but it seems like this is the only way to contact the tecnical people. My username that I’m trying to use is Alex113 (at least I hope it is!). Also I am under 13. Thanks in advance!
So sad this never worked out.
Who knows if it would have turned out, but the nature sets were amazing in that concept art. I really hope they have a movie soon with that level of caricatured but still organic and believable stuff.
Believe me when I say this, Newt would have been at least as successful as Toy Story 3. If Pixar ever decides to remake this movie, I’ll see it every week!
This concept art is mind-blowing. Why did they have to cancel this film? 🙁
