"Oh where, oh where has Upcoming Pixar gone?!?"
Don’t worry, I’ve been here all along and since news has been slow lately (not something I can say often) I’ve got something to fill the gap! How about inviting you into another facet of my visit to Pixar Animation Studios?
Sounds good, huh? I’m positive that this feature will get you guys excited! I sure hope it does, at least. I guess we’ll see how much participation there is.
Welcome to "Pixar Visit: Reader Participation!" It’s interactive!
I’m sure you’re all very curious about some of the stuff we got to see in Emeryville and I have quite a few pictures to show you. Due to the blog’s formatting, I can’t comfortably post many images here, but that’s the beauty of it. I’m letting you decide on what you want to hear about.
So here’s how it works. All you have to do is check out my Flickr photostream. If you have any questions about specific pictures, just let me know here in the comments for this blog post. I won’t be answering anything (or much of anything) on the picture uploading site itself as I want this to be a community experience and possibly a discussion.
If you need any help deciding on a question or any minutiae, please feel free to review my earlier Pixar Visit post which covers a wide variety of experiences in brief. The best part is that you may be able to match some pictures with some of the events. Please, don’t try to get TS3 spoilers out of me.
• Is that me with Pixar prez/co-founder Ed Catmull?
• From Twitter to Pixar — Cat Hicks, Lindsay VanDerGalien, Nick Pitera!
• Life-sized — Mike & Sulley, Guido & Luigi, Buzz & Woody, Nemo & Dory with Bruce, The Incredbiles.
• More than life-sized — Luxo Jr. and the Pixar ball (Phase II construction behind.)
Please post a link to the picture with the questions or comments that you may have. I’ll do my best to let you know how I felt about each one. Of course, there’s much more I can’t show just yet, so stick around.
See if you can spot me… it’ll be easy in a few. Enjoy Pixar from my eyes!

I’m jealous you got to meet Ed Catmull. I’ve been able to do many reports about him in my engineering class, which has been interesting.
How tall were the Lego Buzz and Woody? They look like 3/4-human-height.
I love the TS3 standee, where they’re ‘poured’ out from the box. And the Toy packaging one. Now /that/ would be neat to have in theaters.
thewisecookiesheet – Good question, I felt I was at eye level with Woody, but I may just have a faulty memory. Actually, they’re pretty scary to stand around. First, you marvel at the artistry and extreme attention to detail needed to get all of those LEGOs in place. Then, you slowly back away to make sure you don’t accidentally trip and destroy the set-up. 🙂
I am told that woody is 6’2” tall in the lego version in the lobby..
Hey Martin, I know how tall the lego Woody and Buzz is, but what about the Pixarians? Are they taller or shorter than they seem on the DVD extras? I’ve always wondered that about celebrities…
Rachel- Do you want to know about any specific Pixarians? Some were pretty tall while others were really short. All in all, personality shined through. I don’t want to throw out names, but if you can, I’ll let you know how tall they were if I met them. The DVD extras would probably give you a good idea though.
I would be interested in knowing what sort of stuff they sell in the shop that you can’t get any where else…
Btw, where did you get that ‘3’ shirt? did you specially-make it?
I’m just asking, because I’m planning to make my own when I go to the Chicago showing in May.
Was wondering if you did make it, if you could give me some tips or pointers.
Last Anonymous- I noticed short film toys like the Boundin’ Buddies. They also had film strips from Incredibles and Nemo in a cube and of course tons of exclusive t-shirts!
uruseiranma- That shirt was an earlier gift from Lee Unkrich so I don’t have any tips on making them, sorry.
So, how do you go about getting a tour of Pixar Studios?
I do believe, I had heard they are private. But, I am visiting California this summer, and this is something, I’d really love to do. any help? 🙂
Last Anonymous- I was invited by Pixar for their Toy Story 3 blogger/press junket. If you look throughout this blog, many recent posts address opportunities for the public to visit the studio. Otherwise, it’s invitation only. Sorry and good luck!! 🙂
Wow! Really great pictures! Thanks for this exclusive look into the studio.
I am very impressed with the art work around the studio, particuarly the painting of the apparent flying ham. I love it! It is so humorous and makes me dream of flying myslef.
I’m just wondering, what was your reaction to this “flying ham” artwork?
Well, I saw the movie before I got to see that piece of art so I just laughed and remembered what I had seen. I really love that Pork Airship — I think everyone will. It’s actually one of my favorite things in the film, as random as that is.
Lovely pictures, Martin! I particularly like the “Toy Story” blocks and the Lego mural. It looks like you had a great time while at the studio. It’s a fantastic place, isn’t it? Not to mention, the people are so nice!
Thank you very much for sharing these pictures with us! 🙂
