Well it’s finally made it to the P2P networks everyone. Ratatouille has hit P2P networks across the globe and I can imagine it will be downloaded by many, due to it not hitting theatres in the US for another 8 days, and doesn’t make it to the UK till the 5th of October.
I can tell you, the urge is there to grab the download, due to the fact that I won’t be seeing it till August 30, more than two months away, but I won’t as it would feel like I would be stabbing everyone at Pixar in back for all their hard work. I would urge you all to do the same, by not downloading this film.
Well since the damage has been done, I hope that if people do download it, they will hopefully love it so much that they will go see it in its full glory at the cinema and tell all their friends and family to go see it too. For every 1 pirated downloaded, we get 3 more people seeing it at the cinema?
Just thought I should alert you all to this fact. Have a great day.
UPDATE: Producer of Ratatouille, Brad Lewis, chatted to The Big Picture’s Colin Boyd, and he had a few comments on the situation.
“You hear about it and you kind of have one perspective about it…until it’s your film,” said Lewis. “When I say that, I never thought positively about it, I always thought negatively about it. I guess what I’m trying to describe is, I’m so angry, I can hardly stand it….You don’t realize how many people it affects. I’ve been on this project for over five-and-a-half years, there’s over four, five hundred people that have worked on it, and they give heart and soul on this stuff. I jumped online last night and thought, ‘Let me see if I can download it.’ And I couldn’t, thankfully. Hopefully, it’s somebody who gets some thrill out of vandalism. I don’t know what the thrill is. I don’t get it. It makes me really angry.”
And frankly, I don’t blame Brad. Please everyone, whatever you do, don’t download this film. It’s not worth it, I mean it’s disrepectful to the filmmakers, and if you do get caught, well then you may have heard some stories about what the MPAA does to people and they are not nice. So DON’T DOWNLOAD THIS FILM!
NOTE: This post does not intend to in anyway condone and promote digital piracy. Please do the morally right thing by the filmmakers, musicians, developers etc and don’t download their works which they have put a lot of effort into making.

What’s p2p?
peer 2 peer. like limewire, kazaa bittorrent etc.
People can be so arrogant. As an aspiring filmmaker, I understand why its disrespectful for people to download movies and not see them in theaters. I would only promote downloading movies if they’re rare films or they are really sucky films. “Ratatouille” is not a sucky movie and its worth the money.
i dont think you shouldve posted this because it just encourages downloading the movie
but then again if ur reading this blog you most likely are a fan of pixar and wouldnt do somethiung like that (to a pixar movie)
The fifth of October? Seriously. That really sucks.
Oh, Entertainment Weekly posted their review of the film. They gave it a B (so it’s still 100% fresh but yeah), and seemed underwhelmed by it. I really thought one of their critiques was irritating though- they criticized it for not having enough Star Power. Um, Pixar is awesome because it DOESN’T rely on Star Power like every other company.
They’re the first people I’ve come across that haven’t been completely wild about the movie. I saw it and it’s absolutely brilliant. I guess you can’t please them all. Oh well.
seriously folks, go pay to see this baby.
totally worth the 7 dollars.
Are you sure it’s actually the movie and not just a fake thing? I used to have kazaa and limewire (not anymore – my computer runs slow enough, thank you) and sometimes it’ll say a movie .. and you check, and it’s not that at all or not a real file etc etc … so perhaps it’s not the real thing?
I have to admit though .. it’s an amazing movie and I love it – and I fully plan on going back and seeing it numerous times. 🙂 I just need to find the cheaper theatres .. can’t keep paying ten bucks to see it. I love you Pixar, but ten dollars is a LOT for a new college studnt. 🙁
You don’t need to worry about fans like me, dude. I don’t even watch trailers and previews because I like to be surprised when I see Pixar movies on opening night from the front row.
Even if you only go see Ratatouille once, and on a day where movie tickets are discounted (in Australia, we have “Super Tuesdays”), it is worth every penny to see this film up on the big screen. =)
Or so I’ve heard… 😉
This could be tempting for someone who has to wait till 23rd of November which is release date in Poland…
Stealing is taking what is not yours. P2P is stealing. Period.
I wouldn’t even have known it was available without reading about it here; it wouldn’t matter anyway because I don’t take other people’s property. And please, no hair-splitting here. You know it’s stealing, if you do it you’re just rationalizing theft.
Disney in their infinite wisdom have decided to show this movie in November in Germany. Well guess where I’m now going to see this film now?
“Disney in their infinite wisdom have decided to show this movie in November in Germany. Well guess where I’m now going to see this film now?”
Stop blaming Disney just because you have no self-control and you believe your need for instant gratification justifies your thievery. I’d love to see the movie right now, too, but I respect the artists too much to steal their product. And I respect myself too much to behave that way.
^^^ And which country are you from???
I don’t know why anyone who will take a part in this disscussion concerning late release date in some countries is alleged thief? I think this is just a sign of our concern about this movie. We would like Ratatouille to do exceptionally well in B.O. Most of us is going to see this movie at cinema even several times if it turns out to be as good as all those early previews claim. This p2p issue combined with late date of release could affect tickets sale regarding those people who this way or another wouldn’t care so much about this movie. Die Hard fans of animation will most likely watch this movie at cinema and buy a DVD/Blu-ray no matter if they would see this low-quality pirated version or not… It’s just sad that this movie leaked out so early and those of us who care about this movie and are going to wait another 4 or 5 months till its release in their countries will be actually somehow “punished” by seeing this movie much later than those pirates who will download this movie today just to fill otherwise a boring evening with some commedy they do not care really about and wouldn’t even consider spending 10$ for a ticker if they can watch it at home for free…
No one is being punished. Life is unfair, decisions are made beyond us for reasons that have little to do with our narrow views and not everyone can be pleased. Most of life you have no control over, nor should you. You do have self-control. You do have a choice: to deliberately commit an illegal act disrespectful to the very people you claim to admire, or stop whining and just deal with the fact that sometimes you have to wait and do the right thing. No one’s lives will end waiting for a movie to come out legally; no one’s hopes and dreams are crushed because they didn’t get to experience something first. Get over your pathetic, whiny self and wait your turn.
Dear Anonymous – you’re trying to be harsh – unnecessarily… I used quotation marks saying “punished” because I didn’t really mean that anyone is actually being punished. I’m just trying to give a proper name to feelings some people may have. I’m not talkin’ about my real concerns. I’m discussing hypothetical situation – just using my imagination. I hope you’re not trying to offend me.
I’m an adult man and have some life experience – I know that life has very little in common with “being fair”. I’m discussing subject of this news. Discussion is meant to be some kind of “expander” for such narrow views as one you’re presenting. I do certainly have self-control – You do not have to worry about me. I would really prefer to keep this discussion carefree, happy and lighthearted. I thought that blogs like this are about being a part of animation fan community and share opinions about good or bad animation news with empathy and understanding. We do not discuss politics, global warming or poor african children dying of starvation… We’re not discussing any real problems, nothing ours lives depend on. But our hobby would be nothing without emotions it is connected with. That’s it…
I’m not trying to be anything. I’m simply offering my opinion and directing it at all readers. If you wish to take it personally, backpedal, then change the subject to topics I never mentioned, knock yourself out.
Stealing is stealing, and it’s wrong. I’ll stand by that.
Thinking about it.. illegal digital distribution of films may be what has lead to lesser legs in films this era. I hear of people seeing films a lot their first couple of weeks, but after awhile, people just want to own it. Everthing’s frontloaded, and if they liked the film, download it to bide their time until it hits DVD. That takes away from the kind of legs Star Wars had it’s original run, or even Titantic. There’s only one place you can see it. P2P, torrents.. they changed all that.
And at the same time, they created a ground for rare films, anime. It’s a major part of why anime has gotten so big. It’s technically illegal to download tv programs airing in Japan, subtitled by fans, but it’s treated like nothing. I guess that’s a good thing, opening up the public to that kind of variety. Anime distributors don’t help their cause either with the price tag though, if they’re attemping to make some real money off the now created fanbase.
Anyway, it is a shame when you really look at the love put into these projects. I doubt it will affect the opening weeks though. And Pixar films, quality in general actually, seems to be immune to the massive dropoffs of manufactured blockbusters. I’ll definitely be watching Ratatouille myself in theater, once again. And probably again after that. And again with the(hopefully 2-disc) DVD. Cheers.
I have had the privilege of viewing this film up on the big screen last Saturday, June 16, and all I can say is that the film is…c’est magnifique — it is indescribably beautiful…. To see this film on anything smaller than a theater screen does not do the production justice, I’ll tell you that. Even if you only receive the chance to view it once — just once — in a cinema, it is worth all ten bucks. All ten. And even if it’s more or less the price than that, it’s still worth it….
So yeah. I agree with luxo on this: Go see the film in theaters. Give Pixar the money they deserve…. Heh.
You know, the whole issue of digital downloads is a large can of worms I don’t really want to get into. For example, is it bad to download the film if that person hadn’t initially planned on seeing it at the theatres, but downloaded it because it was freely available? Or, what if getting a glimpse of this copy of the film persuades someone to bring their whole family to the cinema next week? It’s far more complex than just “you’re stealing our work!”. And frankly, digital downloads are one piece of the puzzle for movie distribution in the future, and you can’t just butt your nose at it and say it is bad. It happened to the music indsutry, and it will get even worse for the film indsutry. But I digress.
I wasn’t planning on downloading it, in fact I had no clue that it was even available until I saw the blog posting. I had already seen the early screening last Saturday, so I wasn’t really seeking it out. And besides, Pixar releases are one of the few times a year I deem my money well spent on going to the threatre.
Anyways, I usually only pirate music and TV shows, but once in a while there’s a good DVD rip of a movie out there (i.e. “Sicko” recently, which I will also go see in theatres just because it was such a moving film). Unfortunately, Ratatouille wasn’t a DVD copy. It’s just a video camera version, and is actually quite low resolution. People certainly wouldn’t be able to watch this leaked copy on anything larger than a 10″ screen (comfortably that is). So, yes it is real, yes it is out there, and no, you don’t have to be afraid of losing box office revenue from it. I mean, this comment thread proves that not many here even know where to find the film, much less download it, much less burn a copy. And I think the geeks that are seeking out Ratatouille on the networks are generally the same type of geeks that praise The Incredibles and love Pixar (+ hate Dreamworks). So trust me, Pixar ain’t losing any cash over having it out there loose on the net.
I also have had the priviledge of seeing it on June 16th and I agree with Luxo amd Mitch on this as well. Seeing it in the theater will be one hundred times better than seeing it on P2P anyway, heheh.
Oh, and to Mitch and anyone from Pixar Planet who is reading this, the reason why I haven’t been on the boards these past few days is because my username became inactive. I did not recieve an email, so with my father (yes, you heard me) I will try to email Pixar Vixen (she’s the right person to contact I believe) and get any further information. With luck, I should be back on the boards soon.
– Bill
YEAH!!! See it in theatres first! I know that Ratatouille is gonna be so awesome! And I love food. Totally worth the money! And you can see the full experience. That’s what Pixar wanted for us! DON’T DOWNLOAD IT!!!
Looking forward to seeing you back on Pixar Planet, Bill. =)
– Rachel.
Thanks. I nearly had a heart attack when that happened. Seriously, it’s not been the same for me without you fellow Pixar Planetians (yes, I made that up) . PP is the first forum I’ve been a part of and so I had no idea what I was doing at the time when the “incident” happened. Like I’ve said, I will try to email PixarVixen (It says Tonyloaf is the Administrator, but she doesn’t have a email link) and get things fixed up.
– Bill
Bill – I hope to see you back on the boards soon, Bill! It’s rather odd when one member of the site leaves for a time; it doesn’t feel like “home”, so to speak.
If you still have a problem, let me know and I’ll ask one of the administrators/moderators to help you.
— Mitch
P.S. I love the name “Planetians”, by the way.
Mitch – Heheheh, yeah. Actually, remember when I mentioned to you about that system that makes it so I can’t recieve or send email? That’s probably why I didn’t get the first email. That’s where my father comes in. If you could mention the situation to PV or TSS or even Dash, and get info from them, that would be helpful. I’m almost positive my email adress is valid.
– Bill
Well, hopefully you can get it sorted out and we’ll see you back there soon. =)
– Rachel.
After seeing Ratatouille at a sneak peek 2 weeks in advance, it has only made me want to see it even more. this is the type of movie that you should see on the big screen. the vistas of Paris are amazing.
