Cars has passed the $200 million mark within the U.S. at $205,504,000. What a monstrous efforft from Cars.
It is currently number 3 for this years U.S. grossings behind X-Men: The Last Stand and The Da Vinci Code according to Box Office Mojo. I am not sure this will stand for long. It will probably come in 4th soon because judging how Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest is doing, with an estimated $132,028,000 intake domestically, I am sure it will be a great success.
On the worldwide box office, Cars is currently 5th. However it has still yet to open in the UK, Germany, Italy and numerous other countries yet. Judging by other worlwide success rates of Pixar movies, I think it can be expected (one POTC:DMC takes it place of course) to come in 4th on the worlwide list. What an achievement that would be.
So Cars is doing very well in my opinion. What do you think?

Passing $200M makes it an official blockbuster in the US Domestic Box Office. Try calling it a “failure” now. The domestic gross of The Da Vinci Code currently stands at $213M and has essentially stagnated there. I can see Cars overtaking it over the next few weeks. X3 stands at a shy over $230 and is also stagnating, so besting it is possible. Cars dropped the lest of any film over the opening weekend of POTC:DMC, so it has breath left in it. It is keeping pace with Monsters, Inc, so a $240M to $260M overall domestic take is as good a guess as any. All that said, however, POTC2 looks to have a monstrous domestic box office haul, unless it suffers massive after-opening fatigue. Bank on Pirates locking up the #1 2006 movie slot unless one of our year-enders has some surprising breath in it.
On the international scene, I don’t imagine Cars coming close to the take of The Da Vinci Code, that film had the massive international appeal that Cars, up to this point, seems to be lacking. Pixar’s last outing, The Incredibles, took in $631 worldwide, and this year’s Ice Age follow-up has banked $639. I’d imagine Cars will have a similar performance when all is said and done, maybe a bit less. It will most certainly pass the $400M required for international blockbuster status.
Onestley, I thouroghly enjoyed Cars. B.O. doesn’t matter to me.
Pixar made another good movie.
Wow! You are very good at analysing stuff Jarak.
Anonymous: I agree. I think Box Office is irrelevant to how great a movie is. The only reason I post about it is to shove it up the snobs who call it a failure, noses.
Wow, POTC2 broke “Revenge of the Sith”‘s one year old record ($50 Million) by garnering the highest opening day box office gross in history (with $55.5 Million). As a huge “Star Wars” fan (that’s why my screenname is CountSolo), that somewhat sucks. But as someone said, BO grosses matter much less than the film’s quality does, and I think the “Star Wars” films, which are my favorite films of all time, are absolutely brilliant. I’m still pretty interested to see POTC2 though (despite critics’ mixed reviews, as per RottenTomatoes). The first one was actually very good.
Speaking of “Cars”, I am very glad that it passed $200 Million. As jarakmaldon said, it has now officially become an official blockbuster in the US and Canada. But once again, quality is more important, and “Cars” was also an absolutely brilliant movie. Pixar’s streak continues!
Luxo Jr.:
Right. Of course.
(There isn’t anybody at this site who thinks it’s a failier, right?)
…sorry for my bad spelling…
Cars is doing very well in midweek days, far better than other pixar films in the same runnning time, but not in the weekends… perhaps is all about the 112 minutes…
I think Cars is doing a hundred times better than most of the movies out this year, so there’s very little people can say about that. What many critics are doing is comparing it to the success of Finding Nemo and The Incredibles – something that’s allowed, of course, but not the only thing that matters.
And with the World Cup finally over, the rest of the world is finally going to leave their couches and go back to the movies. Touching on what Jarakmaldon said, I don’t think Cars will do as well as the other Pixar movies internationally because it’s on a subject that doesn’t translate nearly as well as the other movies have.
Plus, you know, it’s an awesome movie.
