Both Bloomberg and Jim Hill Media are reporting that Buena Vista Home Entertainment and Buena Vista Distribution will be dropping their names for Disney within weeks.
Chief Executive Officer Robert Iger is seeking to simplify the company’s marketing and reduce costs by narrowing most brand names to Disney, ABC and ESPN. In February, Iger changed Touchstone Television production company to ABC Television Studio and Buena Vista Games became Disney Interactive Studios.
says Bloomberg.
However, the Touchstone, Miramax and Pixar film studio names will remain as they are. “With Disney we think we have a durable brand that gives us a competitive advantage,” Robert Iger, Walt Disney CEO said at a meeting at an analyst meeting in February, “We’re going to aim to make that brand more durable, more competitive and more value-generating on a global basis.”

It makes sense to do that, makes things cheaper – think stationary, products etc., and not many people know what Buena Vista does, considering that Disney is the global brand for the entire network, BV doesn’t really “create” anything new.
Also, with more feature films linked to the Disney theme park brand (Pirates of the Caribbean for instance), it makes sense for Disney to remain. However, it would have been nice to see BV remain in some minimal capacity, just because of its history.
