This rumour has been making the rounds around the web these past few days. I have resisted posting about it due to the lack of evidence and just how ridiculous the idea of a sequel to Cars sounds at the moment.
The start of this rumour seems to have originated from Al Lutz, who is usually very reliable, over at MiceAge.com. Al mentioned a 2009 release for Cars 2 in his daily editorial note. I really can’t see why Disney would want to make Cars 2 considering how Cars underperformed in their eyes. Why not a sequel to Monster’s Inc. instead. Why is a sequel even needed? It raises even more questions such as, is Pixar calling the shots on this one or is Disney pressuring Pixar into making it? It all sounds highly ridiculous to me. The Blue Sky Disney blog also mentions this, as the writer knows people among the Imagineering circles.
There is also talk of a Cars short film to be attached to the 2008 film (WALL-E). Al Lutz said he heard about it from Paul Newman himself at the Indy 500. BSD also says that they have heard about this too and does believe it.
Please do leave a comment and let us know your opinion. I can’t see this rumour going away anytime soon unless Disney/Pixar make an official announcement.
UPDATE: When reading the comments below, a very reasonable and probable explanation was put forth.
To me, this almost seems like false info to try to identify a leak. Pass word around the studio on the hush-hush to a few people about a hot new Cars 2 project and see if it gets out, or if people are sticking to their NDAs.
says epthegeek. This to me seems quite probable. El Jobso (Steve Jobs) has been known to employ these tactics at Apple to find leaks. Maybe John (Lasseter), and Ed (Catmull), are also employing these tactics now at Disney to source leaks.
However the general consensus seems to be that there is a good chance of a Cars short film. Thanks for all your comments!

I’ll bet Pixar could probably pull off a feature-length Cars 2, given that they worked up a new storyline. However, the characters themselves would pose a major challenge for a sequel. Most of the main characters are already pretty run through in the first movie, and any sequel performed by them would probably be a little ‘boring’ on account that we know these characters already.
A mini-movie? I wouldn’t doubt one. Pixar did a great job with ‘Mater and the Ghost Light’, and they could probably bring in another. The types of characters themselves make for great 5-minute shorts.
Why Pixar would want to create a sequel to Cars, I have no idea (I thought it ended wonderfully), but since Cars is my favourite Pixar film so far, I would be extremely excited to see it happening! Wow! These are only rumours so far, so I can’t jump around just yet. *crosses fingers* I don’t think Cars underachieved at all, but if this is true, I wonder what they have in mind for a new plot…
I loved Cars.
Personally I thought that it needed better pacing and a stronger theme, but besides that it was great.
I’d love to see a sequel with Cars, maybe not Lightning, but with just Cars. I think it could be great.
yeah, i totally agree with you. a sequel to Cars doesn’t make any sense to me. Especially, as you’ve said, when they “underperformed” and when there’s more sense to make a sequel out of Monster’s Inc.
And it does make me wonder as well if Disney or Pixar is calling the shots on this one. It seems a bit absurd.
I could definitely see a Cars short though! I’m sure there are a lot of ideas they could use to make a short out of Cars and the characters.
Cars to would be sweeeeeet!
I say go with the original electric car storyline for “2”
Dang. I always miss-spell.
“Cars to”.
hee hee.
To me, this almost seems like false info to try to identify a leak. Pass word around the studio on the hush-hush to a few people about a hot new Cars 2 project and see if it gets out, or if people are sticking to their NDAs.
Just my guess. I really don’t expect a cars sequel.
I would rather see a 2-disc regular Cars DVD (with commentary) being released rather than Pixar putting out a Cars 2. Not that I’m against a Cars 2. If that’s true and Pixar puts together a strong enough story for it, I’d love to see it!
Al Lutz is in the same category as Jim Hill when it comes to Disney and ‘reliability.’ They both hate Disney while claiming to be doing it all for Walt…blah blah blah. They make an online career of milking dissatisfied employees’ comments and justifying their self-hatred like most critics do, by projecting their insecurities. Please don’t confuse their websites with anything approching journalism or useful information.
Really, a sequel to Cars so soon isn’t a crazy idea from an economic standpoint. While Cars did not rake in as much box office loot as suspected it would at first, it didn’t do badly, either. It had incredible staying power over the summer in the US, but the real bread and butter came from merchandising. Sales of Cars related products went absolutely through the roof. That gave Disney quite the chunk of change, a chunk of change it wouldn’t mind seeing again.
So how can they do it? Put out another Cars film. They know the faults of the first and can fix them in a second; chiefly making sure it tailors more to an international audience. Doing it quickly, within three years, ensures that the crowd that went out and saw the movie a first time, specifically the kids, still has memory of it and want to go out and immediately see the second.
The result of a Cars sequel in 2009, based on my assessment, would be a fairly large opening weekend and, if it is a good movie, strong staying power over a summer season. Again, astronomical toy sales are a given. Plus, as long as there aren’t any marching, dancing, singing or surfing penguin movies that year, Cars would have another chance at golden hardware for the shelf.
My 2 year old son loves cars. He watches it every day. I sure hope Cars 2 comes out so that he can watch something new.
why not a prequil to cars? Lets see where Mcqueen came from
Cars 2 – YES! My kids love the original, and quite frankly, so do I. Can’t wait to see #2. Shallow story? Who cares, it’s a kids’ movie folks. Need more fart jokes.
HOLY SHOOT!!!!!!!! CARS 2’S GONNA ROCK!!!!!!!!! sory… i’m absolutley CRAZY for Pixar movies!!! OMG!!! i can’t believe it! i must be psychic! i’ve had crazy dreams about this & all of them have actually happened!!! scary… lol. i’m sooooooooo excited 4 Cars 2 to come out!!!!!!!!!
Every kid I know loves this movie, and merchandising is out of this world. A sequel would only bolster merchandising revenue…also, this was Lasseter’s baby…I’m sure he’d love another go at it.
I have to second what epthegeek said…
I used to work at Apple, and the top managers would come up to you and wink and nudge you new product name and show you how cool the product is. Then you read about it in the rumor sites a few days later, but the name listed on the site is just a tad off the name you were given.
You knew then you were gonna keep your job and someone was about to get fired. 😀
I seriously doubt that the movie Cars “underperformed” in the merchandising department!!
The first Cars movie only “underperformed” in the sense that it did not live up to expectations. It still made a lot of money in the theater, on dvd sales and is still killing in merchandising. Sounds like a “sleeper hit” that has the potential for even better performing sequel. At the very least, I imagine Pixar is considering a direct-to-dvd release. I also understand how the original may not have had international appeal, as it deals with issues that are very uniquely American. How about Lightning doing a stint on the European circuit? Anyway, my son watches it several times a week and I still get a kick out of it. I’m up for Cars 2.
I FRIGGIN LOVE CARS!MATER ROOOOCKS!
They just GOTTA make a sequel….
I agree with firstin59 – Cars is extremely popular on DVD – everyone I know with a son under 5 ADORES this movie (not 5 min ago, I ordered the Xbox game from Ebay). My son is 2.5 and can’t turn it off. I even find that I can’t turn away from it even though I’ve seen it 25 times. There’s something about this movie that appeals to the little boy who loves cars in all of us.
Cars2 would be fantastic! I would be hard, however, to trump the storyline of original…
The movie is definitely a big merchandising succes, and I know what I’m talking about. So far, I’ve spent more than 250 Euro (= about $300) on Cars toys for my two young sons, who are absolutely crazy about the movie.
I’d love to see a Cars sequel, but let’s hope Pixar will change the landscape a bit, ’cause I’ve really seen enough sand in the first movie!
What about a scene with Guido and Luigi in Italy? I remember there was a promotional poster showing Luigi in Italy, so why not? I’d love to see some rain in the sequel too, or snow perhaps. I’d also love to see Sarge securing a Saudi oil transport in the Gulf region following a global oil crisis!
J.
I really love cars and i hope they make a sequel. and i´m 15 :P. it´s so great that i bought the DVD at release. i watched it about 5 times and i really really hope that the will make a full sequal, no short film, but that would be even better than nothing!
greet from Germany
How about a Monster Trucks movie..Cars meets Monsters Inc.
I just took my 2.5 year old son to see ratatouille and he liked it, but lost interest half way through. When he watches CARS he will watch it without moving out of his seat…he is in love with McQueen! I hope it’s true about PART 2!!
It would make better sense to make a prequel, based around either “The King” or “The Hudson Hornet”, rather than Lightning.
As many have said, their kids loved it, so did mine, but they are lucky that their daddy drives a car like that, and one of his friends drives a 95 car, with the nickname Lightning!
Go for it Pixar, you know we all want you to!
I would love to see a sequel to Cars! Or even a prequel about Doc Hudson becoming a racer. Who knows? Cars may have been a little slow at times, but overall — I’ll never get tired of watching it! All the technology and particulars in the film amaze me, mostly because I’m an artistic person. But I’d love to see Doc Hudson in a sequel!
Pixar should Totally make a cars 2!!!!! Its my fave movie!!!! It rox!!!They gotta make a sequel!!!!They should add a new character!!!!
It would b kool if they showed where Lightning Mcqueen came from!!!
Cars 2 would be great, my kids love cars, it was very big in the UK! If cars 2 came out my kids would be there watching at the cinema, and buying the DVD later and any character toys etc. Easy to make Cars 2, Mcqueen never won, perhaps he can this time! Dad from UK
Cars was to an adult not the best film around, however kids around 2-4 years are completely caught up by it…
AND these kids have parrents, who buy merchandise and dvds…
movie success is no longer just about high box office totals…its just as much about selling toys, replicas, bedsheets shoes and what have we…and lets face it 2 year olds are not going to the cinema, but they ARE getting the toys…
i have bought a silly amount of toys for my son who is as much a fanboy as anyone can be, its all he plays with, and in his kindergarden, and our freinds different kindergardens Cars merchandise is spreading like the wind…
So i am pretty sure that a cars sequel WILL be a financial succes and would be worth it for disney/ pixars… and i know I would be forced to buy it =)
I always thought a prequel would have been nice about Mater and his past life. Maybe an old (Showcar) girlfriend drives through town now and the past is back. Throughout the movie, he mentions much of his past. There is enough material there to tie both movies. (This from a mom of a boy who loves the movie.) I already know what her accent should be. 😉
Even if the movie did not do as well as liked, it did do good. Even better is the merchandise sells through the roof internationally. There is still a demand.
A new Cars “update” in some form would definitly help remind the few boys out there who have forgotten about Cars.
I see others share these thoughts, but I thought I would 2nd and third them. 😉 I also wondered if a rumor like this was created to see if it did become big. If it became big, then a go for Cars 2 would stand a chance. I am sure Disney/Pixar is not done with this yet. 😉
I don’t care what they do as long as the make a sequel. My kids are in love with Cars and never had the chance to see it in the movies.
They can’t make it fast enough. Desperate for a sequel.
J.Morales in Phx says:
I agree with everyone out there that would love a sequel. I think I took my daughter to see it 3 times in the regular theater and once at the dollar theater. And you don’t want to know how many times we’ve seen the DVD. We’re cars fanatics and they could do anything as far as a new story line goes. The possibilities are endless. Introduce new characters, new locations. It would be a good move. I don’t think the movie did bad at all. That’s my take on the situation. I’d love to see a sequel to it. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
I looooved the Cars Movie!I thougth it was Fantastic!I’m really exited about the Cars 2 (well if there is going to be one).
My Openian is that to have Cars 2 made, as well as to make little stories such as Mater and the GHOSTlIGTH.I liked that!
Lots of my friends agreed with my idea. So please go with my openian.
AND AND . . .
OH! GOTTA GO! TOODLES!
My friends and I have been talking about a sequel since the first one came out. We decided that Sally and McQueen would get married and their kids would be Mini Coopers and the kids could be in the “Bushings” Series (like the Busch Series in NASCAR). Just a funny little thought…
i thick the cars film was awsome my fav animated film yet i was hoping they would make a cars 2….you have to at least like a small section off the film and it makes a great stroy line with hundreds of morals….and do remeber it is a childrens film……i like it because im under 20XXXDDDD……cant wait for second film……….
i support the drh if you do go to deviant art and typre your fav car name:)
Well Cars isn’t a kid’s film. No Pixar film aims to be a kid’s film. They are for everyone!
My kids are 2 and LOVE the Cars movie…I’d welcome a sequel.. And by then the kids should be old enough to take to the theatre . We’ve bought two copies of the movie and my son and nephew (also 2) have tons of Cars toys and other items. We buy all the new matchbox sized ones the minute we see them in the store. It would be nice to also see more Happy Meal toys with the new movie!
I would like to see a Saturday morning cartoon for Cars as well as Cars 2. I would like to see all the cars including Lightening.
I THINK CARS 2 WOULD BE GREAT BECAUSE THE FIRST FILM WAS AWSOME AND THEY SHOULD LEAVE THE ORIGINAL CHARACTERS IN AND JUST ADD NEW ONES AND ALSO EVERYBODY THAT READS THIS SHOULDNT JUST SAY IT BECAUSE YOU DONT WANT TO SEE IT YOU SHOULD THINK ABOUT ALL THE KIDS THAT LIKED IT AND WANT TO SEE ANOTHER FILM
I agree shallow plot line or no shallow plot line. Cars is fantastic! I would love to see a sequel and I know my nephew would too. I actually didn’t see it in theaters because I thought it looked a little juvenile. It was only later on DVD that I discovered the magic of cars. I was introduced to cars by my nephew, he loves the movie! I think a Cars 2 would probably do better than Cars because of the loyal fan base created through merchandise sales. I purchase the occasional toy for my nephew and some are difficult to find because they fly off the shelves. We just acquired the last car in his die cast model collection (he now has them all). My prediction is that a Cars 2 would do better than the first one. I can’t wait till Disney comes out with one…hopefully soon.
Little boys love cars, they would be kidding themselves if they thought it wouldn’t sell. Look at all the merchandise and its selling better than ever. Heck I’ll even give them some story lines if need be. Kids LOVE CARS!!! Please give us a Cars 2.
I am excited about Toys 3 but its not as hot with the little boys any more as Cars.
I would love to see a Cars 2 come out and so would my son, that kind of movie appeals to everyone from the young to old- my son is 3 Im 25 and my dad is 55 and we all loved the movie. Also my sons room is done in the cars theme and he watches it all the time mainly to see mater drive backwords and get a ride on the helicopter in the end. PLEASE come out with another one!!
You know. I loved CARS, my 2 year old son loves it, my 7 year old brother loves it, all of my nieces and nephews and friends and my brothers friends, etc… All LOVE this movie. Besides it being just a wonderful, funny all around movie with the wonderful, LARRY THE CABLE GUY, this movie had such a wonderful moral to the entire story. It wasn’t JUST a cute kids movie, because there was so much underneath it all. The message it sent, the values and morals it put out there to the kids AND the adults. And all in a kid-friendly, funny, exciting way. You don’t really see that very often. You couldn’t ask for more. This movie exceeded my expectations, and now they are talking about a sequel with all of those wonderful, intelligent, good natured characters teaching awesome things to our kids and just being amazingly entertaining? HELL YES! Please, bring it on! Just because it is a sequel doesn’t mean it has to tie into the first. They could come up with a whole new story line with the characters we have all met. ifferent situations, events, etc… I mean just because a chapter in our lives closes with a happily ever after, doesn’t mean that your finished, your done, your over with. It means that one door has closed and many more will open providing you with more situations and experiences to take advantage of. Why is this such a big deal? Cars was wonderful and had EXCELLENT ratings. No one underperformed or any nosense like that. For example, last year at Christmas time the CARS items from the movie were so hot and wanted that you couldn’t find them anywhere, especially Mater and then Lightening McQueen in second place. I searched for several things because the kids loved it so, and I wanted to get several things and everyone was sold out! It was right up there with the overstated TMX Elmo! I was hoping as soon as I saw CARS for the first time that it wouldn’t be the end and we would get to enjoy these characters again – all of the kids did too! It would be nice to bring in Snotrod, Boost, DJ, and Wingo as stronger characters because the kids thought they were the coolest “NOPI” cars. And since it is a kids movie – the kids are the critics that really count, and as far as I can tell – they have definitely voted. Give it a chance before throwing out all of the critical comments guys – you have no idea what they are planning and it is bound to be a wonderful surprise. Me personally, I can’t wait!!!
Cars underperformed??? only in box office sales.
My son is a mad on the film Cars. He loves the film that much that he wathces it every day.
Why do adults comment on how good a childrens film does?? Why not ask the kids themselves what they think. I bet in an opinion poll aimed at kids, the results would show that it is the best childrens film ever!!!!. Id bet money on that.
Cars 2 would be a massive hit for the kids. who cares what adult critics think.
Pixar Films are all different, they say do a monsters inc sequal why not a cars sequal??? Every Pixar Film that has been brought out is brillient in their own way. I just can not understand why people say cars was a flop when they are selling the toys by the millions. I am a 23 year old mother and I love cars, In actual fact I love all the pixar films!!!!!! So thumbs up to CARS 2!!
Pixar recently visited my school, and they said the next three projects were Wall-E, Up, and Toy Story 3. Not much room for a Cars sequel before 2009.
Well, I did like the movie, but, the story finished. There was a definite happy ending with no room for a sequal. Besides, they seem far too busy to make another movie.
More of the Delinquent Road Hazards please. They could be quite comical.
My son still watches Cars everyday. I would LOVE there to be a sequel. I not only think it would be extremely popular with all the little Cars fans out there, but it would be nice for parents, like me, to see these characters in a new storyline. I am pro CARS 2.
Two reasons:
1. Cars was way better than Monsters – it doesn’t scare kids.
2. Do you know how many die cast cars they have sold and other merchandise? How many Monsters Inc items did they sell?
Great, so it’s come down to money has it?
Yes, Pixar is making Cars II, for the reason some have mentioned. Even though the movie sucked and everone knows it, the merchandising was the best for any Pixar picture to date. When they announced it last year the staff was somewhat dumbfounded, and people are scrambling to not get asked to work on it.
This part I’m not sure about – but I think Toy Story III is supposed to be straight-to-video, and Cars II will be out in 2010, after Up.
Hmm..howabout a little drift action in cars.
It’s getting to be avery popular extreme car sports and has shown little resemblences to drift – the part where doc showed lightningto driftin the desert and another of lightning doing a drift at the end of the race? Just some idea.
I love CARS! I sure would love to see CARS 2!
My daughters love the movie and are almost glued to the DVD.
Ahhhhh…no
Cars was good..that’s a given, but it gave away to much information about the characters to make a plot for a second one. You would almost need new characters which you could to make a second.
i would love for you to come out with cars 2 movie my grandson is 17 months old and watches it at least 3 times a day . he laughs and dances he loves it. maybe mcqueen and sally can get married and mcqueen can win the race this time or even doc hudson get to race again. since they were making mcqueens racing headquarters there in radiator springs. there is alot of potential things to make great story line for cars 2 movie.,
It’s actually been confirmed (kinda-sorta) that Cars 2 is in production for a 2011 release. I mean, Disney and Pixar are stupid if they pass on the chance for another bazillion dollars.
It has been confirmed that Cars 2 will be coming out in the summer of 2012. In between that time and now (spring 2008) there will be the films, in order: WALL-E, summer 2008; Up, summer 2009; Toy Story 3, summer 2010; newt, summer 2011; The Bear and the Bow, winter 2011; and then, of course, Cars 2. I really can’t wait until Toy Story 3 comes out. WALL-E and Up seem quite good also. Cars didn’t seem to need a sequal in my mind, I am kind of surprised Pixar is making a sequal. Hopefully they continue their storytelling and animating genious and Cars 2 will have a good storyline. Also, I didn’t think the first Cars was nearly as bad as most people say it is. A Bug’s Life and The Incredibles were worse in my mind, although they are great (the others are just even better). Anyway, I hope Cars 2 will be a worthy enough sequal.
I say this just may be true. I saw this at work today and I found the electronic version of this article:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/01/business/media/01pixar.html
it’s called MERCHANDISING… i have a 3 year old obsessed with Cars. That movie has cost me a fortune in toys… the movie itself is just a delivery system to get the kids to want the toys. All my boys friends are the same way. i bet Disney/Pixar could show the movie for free or give it away online and still make plenty.
i would imagine also that they would explore a whole other set of characters for Cars2 in order to sell more toys.
I’m just now trying to prepare for the onslaught of robots that will now be littering my house in the coming months.
Since the plot to Cars was basically the same plot as Doc Hollywood, why make another? It’s the only Pixar movie that I thought was badly written,
i didnt really like the first but i think if they did make a cars 2 i would probally go and see it
The only thing I found disturbing in Cars is when Lightning outruns a train when he’s trying to catch up to his trailer. THAT’S a horrible message to send to kids!!
I don’t understand why a lot of people didin’t like it.
What is wrong with it ?
I wonder why they want to do a sequel it did finish very well i can’t imagine another story but if they happened to do a Cars 2 i’d love to see it.
And yes i agree they did a lot of merchandising with this film. but what can we say all their films had a lot of toys sold out etc…
I also think that its sort of a bad idea, but when i heard the storyline it did’nt sound too bad. i’m just not sure why they could’nt make a sequel to the incredibles or something instead. dont get me wrong i liked the movie and all but when i heard about cars2 idid’nt really believe it until i saw the logo and some articles and stuff. cars 2 has a realese date of the year 2012. the storyline is……..Lightning and mater travel the world and do some races. i’m guessing mater will probably be his new manger. since george carlin died he wont be able record for cars 2, and paul newman probably won’t record for it either.
They made a billion dollars off merchandising for Cars. More than ANY other Disney film EVER. That is why they are doing a sequal. If Monsters, Inc. sold millions of little Die Cast Mike’s they’d do another one.
Cars 2 has had recent setbacks that will make it harder…pixar will have to pull up a presto chango Cars 2 storyline to make this one work.
i’ll watch many times for sure if cars 2 really coming out… n i’ll buy the dvd…..
or even Pixar only will make the short movies of cars, i’ll support it.. ^^
coz i just love the animation.. seriously
Cars short. Yeah! Cars 2. A LOT of YEAH’S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ITS REAL! DO YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN!?!?
Its coming out, June 24, 2011.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cars_2
I hate it when people say that Cars stunk so badly that they shouldn’t make a sequal. It makes me angry. There has to be a sequal to it. Maybe it would be a chance for you Cars-haters to redeem the movie to greatness. Cars is the greatest movie ever created, and who cares if the plot’s not original? Pixar did a good job of making it their own. Cars 2 is a long ways away, but I know it’s gonna be worth the wait.
cars2?idont no
You are so right, LightningandDoc….
