The current box office takings according to Box Office Mojo, for Cars are….
U.S. – $182,056,000
International – $24,404,000
Worldwide – $206,460,000
It makes me wonder why the international takings are only $24,404,000, and the international takings at the box office usually make up the majority of grossing at the Box Office. What do you think?
Anyway, Cars is doing fantastically. I bet everyone at Pixar is proud!

I think it’s quite obvious why the International Box Office is much lower than the American Box Office…every other country knows American cars are horrible.
Also, lots of people don’t speak English, and the movie is in English.
Solved,
Rod Biscoe
P.S. Rod Biscoe’s Blogspot “It’s Delicious.”
Well Rod.
I have to say I disagree. I mean it is being dubbed into other languages. I live in Australia and have no problem with it. And I am sure they are suiting the movie with more voices from their racers for Europe.
So I don’t see why it isn’t doing well internationally. It should be doing better than $28 mill. They must wait a bit before counting their intakes. It mustn’t be weekly countings maybe. I don’t know really.
I think Cars hasn’t been released in a lot of countries yet. In Germany it will hit theatres on the 7th of september.
Here in Europe movies are dubbed very well, especially here in Germany. So that’s absolutely no problem.
I think you’ll have to wait a little longer 😉
Cheers
Yeah, definitley. It opens in the UK on the 28th of July. And I mean Germany and Italy and them still don’t have it.
Hey I think i just figured out something. The reason it isn’t out in those countries yet because….
1. Dubbing
2. Waiting for World Cup mania to die down and for people to get back into F1 racing there which the season dates March 12, 2006 and it will end on October 22. So it will be getting close towards the final races no? So i wonder if thats it?
Non-US totals are not as religiously tracked and updated as domestic (US + Canada) numbers are. I know that box office mojo updates its foreign totals weekly, based on the info that is available at the time. It could take weeks before accurate numbers are added.
Also keep in mind that this film has not opened in all countries yet. The UK is still up, which typically accounts for a large chunk of foreign sales.
Previous Pixar releases have amassed considerable chunks of change in the foreign gross department. Expect Cars to do the same, just don’t hold your breath for the numbers.
As far as the domestic tally goes, it is doing better than the nay-sayers were saying after opening weekend. Gitesh Pandya over at boxofficeguru.com gave it a $240 estimate last week, which is looking about right. Superman didn’t brutally kill it, so as long as Pirates doesn’t (which it may), that estimate may hold.
Ahh right. Thanks for pointing that out Jarak. As from Disney’s point of view, now that Pixar is a part of Disney, I don’t think they will be overally fussed when and if Pirates of the Caribbean 2 blows Cars out of the water, because they are still making they money from both.
I think the main reason is World Cup, ’cause the dubbing isn’t so long to make (Cars was released in its french version only 5 days after the American release, and the premiere in France took place a few weeks before).
But I personnaly think the dubbing is very weak compared to the original version, so I saw it in english ^^
And the World Cup is also, for me, what explains the relative poor international takings at the box office.
Apologies to everyone else…I was laughign so hard at the first comment I didn’t read any of the others!
I think everyone here agrees that not every Pixar film can top the B.O. of the last one. Cars is doing really well, of course, but it may not click in some countries because the NASCAR trappings so central to the plot may not translate into other cultures. Heck, I know folks in the US that refuse to see it on those grounds. When they check it out on DVD they’ll be sorry they missed this beautiful, fascinating movie on the big screen.
Well, according to Luxo Jr.’s numbers, it has already beaten A Bug’s Life (US) numbers by about 20 Million, and is about 10 Million from breaking Toy Story‘s US numbers.
That’s GREAT IMO. I agree that the Worldwide isn’t up there yet BECAUSE so many countries still haven’t seen it:
Belgium 5 July 2006
Czech Republic 6 July 2006
Hong Kong 13 July 2006
Peru 13 July 2006
Spain 14 July 2006
Bulgaria 28 July 2006
UK 28 July 2006
Egypt 9 August 2006
Estonia 11 August 2006
Italy 23 August 2006
Finland 25 August 2006
Norway 25 August 2006
Sweden 25 August 2006
Switzerland 25 August 2006 (Italian speaking region)
Denmark 1 September 2006
Germany 14 September 2006
Greece 14 September 2006
Switzerland 14 September 2006 (German speaking region)
Turkey 15 September 2006
(I got that from your “Why Cars is a Success” Post, Luxo Jr. :P)
Yeah, we’ll pretty much have to wait till September to see those high number we’ve come to respectfully expect from PIXAR!!!
The good Mr. Jim Hill is still doom’n’gloom about this movie, and now that attitude is shifting towards the upcoming POTC2. Goodness, Cars is sure to stop north of $200M and Pirates is money in the bank. Is someone putting something in his coffee?
The international box office is low because it just began playing in other countries. The reason? FIFA World Cup. Everybody is watching the football (soccer) games.
Everybody is watching the football (soccer) games.
errr.. not this everyone!
Same here! I never got into that sport . . .
I’m in the UK, it hasn’t opened here yet, which would explain the low figures – this is not really much of a story really, is it?
Cars, in my opinion, is absolutely great. Pixar certainly will have their seventh success.
Here is an interesting bit of info I’ve found out… This movie is Micheal Keaton’s second racing/Disney movie in a row. He previously stareed in Herbie: Fully Loaded. Micheal voices Chick Hicks.
Hmm. I didn’t know that. Interesting indeed! Thanks Bill.
