Combat Carl PSA: “Cough in your arm!”

2D Animation, Angus Maclane, Blu-Ray, DVD, Toy Story of Terror!

Posted by Simoa • August 17, 2014

"Toy Story of Terror!", Pixar’s first TV special which premiered on ABC family last fall, will be available on Blu-ray and DVD this week and is filled with plenty of bonus features. One of these is a PSA in which Combat Carl (Carl Weathers) warns against the dangers of coughing. It’s a hilarious, tongue in cheek clip animated in 2D which you can watch below.

Hopefully we’ll be seeing more of Combat Carl in future Toy Story shorts and specials! This brief ad is a brilliant way to continue his presence in the franchise. His appearance in "Toy Story of Terror!" made him yet another funny, colorful addition to this amazing cast of characters. The brains at Pixar obviously recognize his appeal in bringing us this gem, and it would be great to see more.

The Pixar Times also reports that two other ads featuring new toys from the special center on Old Timer and Transitron. Whether those ads will also be in 2D remains to be seen, but we can expect them to be as funny and clever as Combat Carl’s urgent PSA. Update: the Old Timer and Transitron ads function as vintage toy commercials and they can be seen briefly in the Blu-ray trailer.

All this and more is included, along with a ‘Team of Specialists’ feature, which has also been released by Disney.
The clip takes audiences behind the scenes of "Toy Story of Terror!", where director Angus MacLane explains the inclusion of certain toys in the special and offers a glimpse into the fascinating animation process.

Be sure to grab "Toy Story of Terror!" on Blu-ray and DVD on August 19th.

New ‘Toy Story’ TV Special Announced for Holiday 2014

Toy Story, Toy Story of Terror!, Toy Story That Time Forgot

Posted by Brkyo614 • January 17, 2014

Last year brought us Pixar’s first half-hour TV special, Toy Story of Terror. In addition to being an enjoyable return to the Toy Story universe, it was a huge ratings success – so much so that the studio has decided to move forward with another Toy Story special for 2014!

The Christmas-themed special, titled Toy Story That Time Forgot, will be produced by Galyn Susman and directed by Steve Purcell (who co-directed Brave). The official description (via Stitch Kingdom) reads:

"During a post-Christmas play date, the Toy Story gang find themselves in uncharted territory when the coolest set of action figures ever turn out to be dangerously delusional. It’s all up to Trixie, the triceratops, if the gang hopes to return to Bonnie’s room in this
Toy Story That Time Forgot."

Set to return are Tom Hanks as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz, Kristen Schaal as Trixie, Joan Cusack as Jessie, Wallace Shawn as Rex, Don Rickles as Mr. Potato Head, and Timothy Dalton as Mr. Pricklepants. Kevin McKidd (Lord MacGuffin from Brave) joins the cast as Reptillus Maximus. Though an exact date has yet to be announced, the short will air on ABC later this year.

What do you think of this announcement? Did Toy Story of Terror leave you wanting more Toy Story specials?

Behind The Scenes, Toy Story of Terror!

Posted by Brkyo614 • October 15, 2013

It’s easy to dismiss the work that goes into an animated television special, but Pixar has clearly given Toy Story of Terror the same level of attention as they do to their feature films — and nowhere is it more evident than in the short’s finished frames. For a glimpse at what went into the making of Toy Story of Terror, Pixar has uploaded a promo with words from director Angus MacLane and producer Galyn Susman:

If that wasn’t enough, TV.com (via Pixar Post) has a feature exploring the broad strokes of Pixar’s animation process. Check it out here.

The wait is nearly over; Toy Story of Terror airs tomorrow night on ABC in the United States! If you plan on watching, be sure to let us know.

The Michael Giacchino-helmed soundtrack will be available on October 15. Here’s the track list:

  1. The Suspension Is Killing Me
  2. Thinking Inside the Box
  3. Motel Me a Scary Story
  4. I’ve Got a Bag Feeling About This
  5. Why’d It Have to Be Crawl Spaces?
  6. The Ballad of Combat Carl
  7. Iguana Be Kidding Me
  8. Nobody Puts Jessie in the Box
  9. Rock ‘Em Box ‘Em Robots
  10. Pink Peanut Panic

Toy Story of Terror!

Posted by Brkyo614 • September 27, 2013

The Toy Story franchise has accrued a massive cast of characters over the years, most of whom have had at least a short moment in the spotlight. But poor Combat Carl was blown to pieces in the brief moments we saw him during the first Toy Story, obliterated without a line of dialogue. With Toy Story of Terror, though, Pixar is finally giving a Combat Carl doll the respect he deserves with a full-on speaking role.

Oh My Disney premiered a look at the redesigned Combat Carl, who’s set to play a foreboding role in the upcoming special. Fittingly, he’ll be voiced by the fantastic Carl Weathers.

Toy Story of Terror airs October 16 on ABC.
