Ron from Route 66 News took a visit to Galena, Kansas, where they threw a party for Mater’s inspiration on Saturday for the 80th anniversary of historic Route 66.
It’s been the victim of neglect. The odometer reads 99,372 miles, and there’s no telling whether they’re original. Rust covers the entire body, where it nearly obscures the letters “Tannou” and “Joplin, Mo” on the door. The seats desperately need to be re-upholstered. And it gets its fuel from a storage tank that resembles a beer keg.
describes Ron.
They ate Mater sandwiches, had a birthday cake commemorating Route 66’s 80th birthday and the Cars soundtracked blared from a stereo and the Cars DVD was screened on a a big screen TV.
Sounds like it would have been a blast, or as Mater would say, “that was fuu-un!”

That’s so FUNNY! That tow truck really looks like Mater! And, by the way, happy birthday, Route 66!
