Disney on Ice presents Disney/Pixar’s Monsters Inc. today through Sunday at the Coliseum.
“If you’ve seen the movie ‘Monsters Inc.,’ it’s just like that. You have Mike, Sulley, Boo and the whole gang,” said Natalie Cross, a spokeswoman for the production. “There are past-Olympic skaters in the production, and it’s great for any age, any gender, and will appeal to parents as well.”
The ice show features elaborate costumes, choreography, acrobatics and special effects.
“This show is a monster of a spectacle,” producer Kenneth Feld announced in a press release. “It is the largest and most complex Disney On Ice show we’ve ever done. There are more monsters than you can possibly imagine on ice, and audiences will be amazed by these out-of-this-world monsters, and their humorous and human-like characteristics.”
The show is produced on a larger scale than usual, Jerry Bilik, director of the production, announced in the release.
“All of the monsters, the props, the scenery – everything is gargantuan. The monsters are so big that even if you are sitting in the highest seat of the arena, you will feel like you are right there in Monstropolis,” he said.
The production features 33 skaters, almost evenly divided between men and women ranging in age from 17 to 31 years old, from six different countries (U.S., Canada, Russia, Ukraine, Argentina and the United Kingdom). It also features a grand total of 60 monsters, not to mention 140 costume pieces.
“There will also be a sculpting event at 4 p.m. (today) right outside the Coliseum, by the box office,” Cross said. “Local chefs from about six or seven casinos will be sculpting 300 pound blocks of ice.”
