It was bound to happen, it was completely inevitable, Pixar have started a pet rat craze in Paris, France. Breitbart.com reports how Gerald Moreau who runs a group which promotes rats as pets has said that hits to his website have risen 40% since the release of Ratatouille in France.
Children are driving the craze — seeking out soft-coated rats with floppy “Dumbo” ears like Remy, the hero of the Pixar comedy — pushing parents to seek out tips on choosing and caring for a rat.

Since the release of Ratatouille, has it urged you to go and buy a pet rat?

In all honesty, I’ve been wanting a blueish-grey rat like Remy since I first saw the movie. However, I live with my parents and my mom absolutely hates rodents. 🙁
Ha! I’m not surprised one bit. I’ll admit that I have contributed to the cause, as I recently purchased a black-hooded rat not a couple of months after I saw Ratatouille. However, I’d previously owned nine rats and I had wanted a tenth one for months anyway, so that’s different. (snigger)
Thanks for the news, luxo jr., PV, and Dash!

I’ve had rats as pets for years, so in this case it was that fact which made me really want to see Ratatouille, instead of Ratatouille make me want to get a pet rat. 😉
I am a proud owner of 2 little rats and I am very sad to hear about this ‘craze’, no animal should EVER be a craze, they are not toys.
The same thing happened with Finding Nemo, loads of people got Clown Fish and then threw them away.
I think animal sanctuaries will be FULL of rats after Christmas. If that’s the case, I’m going to adopt. Poor ratties!
