“Persepolis” looks like a major art film, and the academy really likes those. I’ll be so angry if Pixar is gypped AGAIN this year, but I do fear that movie could be a problem.
The most worrying thing about the short list is that ‘Alivin and the Chipmunks’ got in there….
I can’t really take any of this seriously…
It could be pretty easy for Rat this time around. Most of those competitors are fairly simple, low-bow or revamped Saturday morning TV fare. While Rat isn’t perfect and has some awkward moments its still probably one of the best animated movies ever and should be an obvious winner.
Cars was an OK movie. It had a more focused story than Blue Sky’s Robots, for instance, more imagination than a lot of others, was well done and had nothing offensive, but was hardly a heavyweight in the pantheon of Pixar movies even if it could equal the best feature of just about any other studio. While Rat is perhaps just barely behind The Incredibles for the best animated movie ever.
Alvin and the Cipmunks and Beowulf didn’t do their LA runs, so they might not be eligible. Well Beowulf has been approved, but Alvin is approved yet. The nominees will be Ratatouille, Beowulf, and Persepolis or The Simpsons Movie
Persepolis is at 100% at rottentomatoes, although only 17 reviews. Still, the praise for it has been strong enough to warrant an upset; and like the first poster commented, the academy loves them some independent major art films. If this was the year Cars was released, I would be sure that Persepolis would win… Rat, however, gives Pixar a fighting chance.
The past year, the film were only three, right? Cars, Happy Feet and Monster House. What about this year?
However, IMHO:
If they’ll be three:
Persepolis – Ratatouille – The Simpsons Movie
If they’ll be five:
Persepolis – Ratatouille – Shrek the Third – The Simpsons Movie – Beowulf.
Hehe, strange indeed… but Happy Feet only won because it was a “green” Oscars that year. There’s no argument on that.
I think Ratatouille has a good chance of getting nominated.. some films you can easily cancel out like Alvin, Aqua Teen and TMNT. While I won’t be surprised if Ratatouille doesn’t win, I would be in shock if they weren’t nominated.
I think it will be Persepolis for it’s artsy flared, but it’s been getting some bad reviews on top of it.
I think it will be down to The Simpsons Movie and Ratatouille. It all depends on if the Academy goes with an old favorite or a quality film.
Also something to take into though would be any possible Pixar backlash from all the Disney stuff.
Personally, Ratatouille is by far the best film here. I’ve not seen Tekkonkinkreet yet though.
I wouldn’t put it past Surf’s Up to make the cut. It’s done well on video and was much better than expected.
How is Beowulf there?!? For the last time, Mo- Cap is NOT animation!!! Cause if they count Beowulf, then I guess films like 300 count as well. A great man once said that Mo- Cap is just decorated live action. If it’s nominated and wins, you know there will be a huge uproar about it. From what I’ve seen on the list, I think Ratatouille and The Simpsons Movie are almost guarantee nominees, but no idea what’s gonna be the third, I would prefer to Meet the Robinsons on there, but I don’t know.
Come on everybody! wheres the faith in Pixar? I still think that Ratatouille will win even with the strong competition.
Frankly, Ratatoullie should bypass best animated movie of the year and be nominated for best movie of the year. I can dream.
I saw Persepolis, I don’t know what the critics are thinking. I did not like it at all. Ratatouille is still the best out of all of those.
“Beowulf, then I guess films like 300 count as well.”
While I’m against Beowulf counting, it and 300 are two COMPLETELY different beasts. In 300 actors just performed on blue screen with Beowulf they motion captured, it’s different.
Come on. You all know as we do in Spain and Europe that the Oscars are just politics and they don´t really mind about the real art or whatever. They want to give what the audience wants to have!. That´s all mostly every time…
beowulf is eligible??? I thought that was a live action movie. Plus, how can Alvin and the Chipmunks be eligible when it’s not even out yet? Whatever. It’d be nice if Ratatouille wins, but after last year with Cars nothing will surprise me.
That’s ridiculous! Alvin and the C’s (It’ll be a C in my opinion) isn’t even eligible! The whole thing is live action with just three animated chararacters. That’s the last straw with these Oscar voters, because they nominated “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp” for best song a couple years ago (didn’t it win, too?) and they gave the Best Picture award to “The Departed” and I think it was just because they thought Scorsese was a ‘genius’ or something. Come on! “The Queen” was better and should have won and they know it! And I agree with whoever said that Ratatouille will be nominated for Best Picture and everyone who’s questioning “Persepolis” and “Beowulf.” It is Mo-cap and the academy needs to come to grips
with that. Oh, and I think it’ll be Ratatouille, Meet the Robinsons, and the Aqua Teen movie because it’s artsy in that it breaks all the barriers of a normal cartoon, and even more so than the Simpsons.
Its good to see Tekkon Kinkreet on the list. This is a seriously beautiful piece of storytelling, animation and filmmaking for that matter. I would definately be happy for Ratatouille to win for the same reasons. These other potential nominees are a serious concern. Oh, hang-on, which film won best animated feature last year? Perhaps I shouldnt be so concerned – these awards obviously hold little weight. I recommend you all check out Tekkon Kinkreet.
