Turns out the early reports were accurate; Disney Infinity, developed by Avalanche Studios, is a multiplayer "toybox" game coming to Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Wii U, Wii, 3DS, and mobile platforms. Disney has taken inspiration from the Skylanders franchise by using a USB "Infinity Base" to scan real-life figurines into the game world. The trailer below should help make things clearer:

Provided that Avalanche Studios can make good on these exciting promises (and I have faith that they will), Disney Infinity could be a much-needed hit for Disney Interactive. We won’t have to wait long to find out, either; Infinity hits shelves this June, alongside a first batch of over 30 character figures sold separately.

I’m not sure if I’m too keen on having to purchase figurines to play the game, but it does seem quite interesting to see all the different characters and worlds interacting with each other. I think the only downside is that you do have to buy the figurines to play (if I’m not mistaken, which I hope I am). The graphics aren’t my favorite in the world, but I do hope I can play this sometime when it comes out. Cheers!

I interviewed to work on this game (I didn’t get it, but my I helped my friends get it!) and I’ve been SO excited ever since I saw what I saw. The figurines to play is actually a great thing…because when you buy the original game it comes with a set of figurines…but after that, it’s a game that keeps growing and expanding as you collect more figurines. They’ve also released an image of Mr. Incredible flying with Buzz’s jet pack. Wouldn’t it be a blast to experiment with the characters between all the worlds?
And it looks like a game that could satisfy for months and even years.
