Pixar continues its streak of box office hits with Cars 2, the studio’s 12th consecutive #1 opener.
Weekend predictions considerably underestimated the film’s potential setting the scene for a fantastic opening day at $25.7 million. With Saturday and Sunday estimates at $23.3 million and $19 million, respectively, Cars 2 tallies in at:
$66,135,507
If estimates prove accurate, Cars 2 would tie with Up as Pixar’s 4th biggest opening yet! Better yet, if the film overshoots by a couple million, it could bust The Incredibles’ ($70M) 2nd place spot. It’s worth noting that the original Cars opened at $60 million just five years ago. Check back for weekend actuals.
Update: International numbers are in! Cars 2 pulled approximately $42 million from 18 territories. Needless to say, it was this weekend’s number one opener globally as well as domestically!
