It’s not very often that we get films that have truly memorable journeys at the box-office — especially this far along.
Last year we had Avatar, The Dark Knight a year before that; a decade ago it was Titanic.
Today, we have Toy Story 3!
In fact, Pixar’s 11th has just passed the caped crusader and Alice in Wonderland to become the fifth highest grossing film of all time and the #1 film of the year worldwide!
Just last week, Buzz and Woody were able to cross the elusive $1 billion dollar mark— great news for both Disney and Pixar. More recent global estimates put Lee Unkrich’s latest at an excellent $1.029 billion — $621M coming from outside of the US/Canada.
Domestically, Toy Story 3 was extended to 1,500 theatres over Labor Day Weekend. Friday through Sunday brought in an estimated $1.9 million — a huge boost from last week’s humdrum $100K daily. Check back to see how Toy Story 3 fares over Monday’s holiday.

excellent!!!
Le freak, c’est chic. Freak out!
Very great result( for an unadjusted for inflation number)!
Love to see Toy Story 3 beat that Alice in Crapderland to become this year’s biggest movie.
I feel worry, though, because DWA is busy promoting HTTYD in Oscar Best Picture nod.( i must admit it, HTTYD can be listed as one of the PIXAR’s best) and when i see Legend of the Guardians website which contain video of each characters and also the movie’s trailers, i feel that this movie will be great and dark( and for animation side, i just curious why LoTG delivered greater animation than 25 years old pixar usually delivered. LoTG was made with $100 mil. budget at Australian newcomer in animation field, Animal logic.)
I’d hardly call Legend of the Guardians better animation, it’s trying to be photo real like Happy Feet, or the Final Fantasy Movie and already looks to be stuck in Uncanny Valley because of it.
There’s a warmth and a charm to stylized animation and it feels better to watch than things that try to be photo real.
Animation style aside, though, I doubt it’ll do better than either Toy Story 3 or How to Train Your Dragon, I haven’t talked to anyone who has more than a passing interest in the film.
Anyway, back on topic, I’m really glad Pixar is doing so well with Toy Story 3, God knows they deserve it. I am a little disappointed that it topped The Dark Knight, but I’m happy that it beat out Alice in Wonderland.
Great post Rey!
I’m so happy for Pixar. They really do deserve the honor of highest grossing film of the year. The fact that Toy Story 3 beat out the Dark Knight is a testament to how much the world loves these toys; they are such amazing characters!
It looks like the Labor Day weekend extended release really helped boost the film’s gross. Smart move Pixar. I hope this sudden increase of cash flow will be spent wisely, but I am not worried about that.
