NYMag’s Vulture, an entertainment and culture blog, have started a campaign already for WALL•E to recieve the Best Picture Oscar at the 2009 Academy Awards.
Could this be the year that the Academy finally realizes that Pixar movies are the closest Hollywood comes anymore to the great, classy populist entertainments that used to be nominated for a gazillion Oscars — the kinds of movies that everyone complains have disappeared from the Academy Awards?
says the blog. I think I must also concur even though I have not seen the film yet. However I have noticed this film seems to have been received better than most, if not all, Pixar films. I’m desperate to see this film knock Finding Nemo out of its highest grossing Pixar film position and would simply adore it, if it beat Shrek 2 out of it’s position of highest grossing animated films for a number of reasons which shan’t be discussed now. But to see it nominated and even perhaps win Best Picture would be the best thing to happen in the Academy since who knows when. Animated films do seem to be discriminated against when it comes to the Best Picture category due to having their own category, but animated films have every right to be in the Best Picture category as much as the next film.
I can’t wait ‘til Toy Story 3 or Cars 2 beats the crud out of Shrek 2.
2010 will be a great year!!
Count me in this campaign. I have dedicated all of my free time to promoting people to watch Pixar films, especially WALL-E. Despite Pixar’s flawless record, it can be hard to convince fellow peers to see a “G-rated” animated film.
But the real question is: what will it really take to get Academy voters to acknowledge animated films in the Best Picture category? I would love to see “From the Best Picture Academy Award Winners of WALL-E” on all of the “Up” posters!
