Two super powers in the industry have come to a pretty surprising deal… what does this have to do with Pixar?
The Walt Disney Company announced today that the company would acquire superhero giant Marvel in a stock transaction of $4 billion. Kind of reminds you of another recent purchase that Disney made in 2006… Yes of course, I’m talking about the Disney-Pixar deal.
It’s even more similar considering what Disney CEO Bob Iger said during the conference call that followed the huge announcement: “If it ain’t broke…” Don’t mess with it, just like Disney didn’t mess with Pixar after the $7.4 billion transaction. As part of the call, Iger mentioned that John Lasseter met with the Marvel execs and they both "got excited about it… sparks will fly!"
This has many fans speculating about a Pixar/Marvel collaboration. With a property like The Incredibles, Marvel could directly influence a possible (far-off) sequel. This may include character cameos, comic book tie ins or a full on crossover. Speaking of comics, could it be possible that Marvel could take over BOOM!‘s current Pixar comics series after the deal is over…?
Some people are even speculating that Pixar will in fact make an adaptation for one (or more) of Marvel’s characters. I say: not likely. John Lasseter is as much of a huge influence over Disney as he is for Pixar which could mean these characters don’t necessarily have to have anything to do with the Lamp. It is known that once contracts end with third-party studios, Disney plans to retain all the rights to movies and such.
The details are still developing and it won’t be an overnight change, you can read more in the official press release. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how Marvel affects the Wonderful World of Disney and their prized jewel, Pixar!
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this!

Why just a crossover? It’s not like Pixar doesn’t have the chops to do an all out Marvel character movie on it’s own, and I see no reason why they can’t, since Disney now owns Marvel. Imagine a Pixar Spider-man, written by J. Michael Strazynski and directed by Brad Bird! Who wouldn’t want to see that? I don’t think that possibility is lost on any of the parties involved.
I’m not saying they can’t…
Of course they can!
I just don’t see them actually doing it. it’s not Pixar’s “style” looking at their track record.
But Pixar is constantly changing in great ways, so who knows.
It’s not impossible.
True… But then, they’ve never had this option available to them, until now. Either way, the mere possibility of Pixar getting their hands on Marvel characters excites me to no end. This has been a fantasy of mine for years!
I think as long as Pixar sticks to their model of quality, quality, and more quality, they could really do a good job collaborating with Marvel. I just dont want to seem some cheaply done spiderman aimed just at kids that completely ruins what Pixar stands for.
Disney Pixar: Spiderman 5! Lots of changes,in CGI,made by Disney, produced by Pixar! Anyways,I don’t think Disney buying Marvel will affect Pixar in anyway.
Pixar won’t do anything with Marvel, although people FROM Pixar might. Like the 2 outside projects being done now. Disney paid too much for Marvel. The best known characters are locked into long term contracts with other studios. The lesser known characters are like creating things from scratch. Why not just do that with original ideas, like Pixar does?!
I would pissed off if Pixar & Marvel collaborate. VERY mad!
@wannabechef: Why? I’d be pissed if they didn’t.
Comingsoon.net reported that John LAsseter met with Marvel about a possible Marvel/Pixar collaboration, and said it’s VERY possible. —> http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=58547
Oh NUTS!! PLEASE no Pixar crossovers!!!
Please no pixar…no crossovers with Marvel…what would the community think of that 🙁
People would be up in arms that Mickey Mouse teams up with Spiderman for Spiderman; The Spider-Mouse….don’t even think about including Pixar unless you make a teen film and not a family film.
Remember that a few years ago we were a lot to believe that Pixar was going to do John Carter of Mars.
So why not a Pixar movie about a Marvel character which is difficult to do in Live Action.
