Blue Sky Disney are reporting that the rumours are true and Pete Docter’s next project is a much anticipated sequel to Monster’s, Inc.
The blog also states that he has been working on this for a while and Pixar are eyeing a 2013 release date for the film.

Obviously, they are getting short on inspiration at Pixar. Come on! Three sequels in three year’s time? They are getting worse than DreamWorks!
If this is true then I’m confident that the glory days of Pixar are over and that Pixar is just another money-hungry Hollywood studio, making sequels to succesfull because they cannot think of something original.
I’d rather see a new story each year…
Cars is my least fave Pixar movie BY FAR, so a sequel there is a year I wont be seeing a new movie. I loved Monsters Inc, but who wants a sequel to that?
I dont think I even want a sequel to Incredibles and that was my favourite movie so far.
I don’t think it’s necessarily lack of inspiration, the money issue it’s probably the reason, Pixar movies are great and it’s cool to able, as an audience, to watch again those characters and worlds you like so much. Of course i much rather see new stories come out from those geniuses, but as long as those sequels are good, as Toy Story 2 was, In the end I guess I’m fine if they continue making great movies.
Sequels are as big of a risk (or bigger) as an original. They offer the challenge of making something fresh and the enjoyment of revisiting old friends. And the assumption that Pixar has run out of ideas is preposterous: some of their big idea men are simply working out non-Pixar projects. And the other big idea men have lots of creative demand as they are trying to make sequels which are better than the originals.
Any critics should learn more about the creative process itself and specifically about Pixar’s process before they predict doom on their future.
I don’t feel any bursts of excitement when I think of sequels either. However, when I broaden my vision and think outside the limitations of my current vision and understanding, I see there is potential everywhere – especially at Pixar – where marvelous material can blossom upward.
I love Monster’s Inc., but the one sequel everyone wants is a sequel to The Incredibles. I don’t understand why the folks at Pixar don’t understand that.
Bird stated he’ll only want to make a sequel if he got a story spark…I guess it hasn’t happened yet.
I don’t know what to think of this.
There are two things in which the sequel will for sure throw away:
1. The ending of Monsters, Inc. we are left with wanting to see Boo for ONE last time. But now she’ll be in the sequel unless…
2. She is not in the sequel either. Then the sequel will not be as good as the first because half the movie is as charming as it is because of Boo.
So sad to hear the good “no sequels from us” days are long gone. Well, I guess better play it safe you guys at Pixar, uh? So disappointing…
I’m really frustrated by the sequel vs. no sequel war starting up.
First of all, a Monsters Inc 3 HAS NOT BEEN CONFIRMED! It’s still just a rumor! Pete Docter saying ‘we’ve thought about it’ does not a Monsters Inc 2 confirmation make!
That said, Pixar never told anyone “WE’RE NEVER GOING TO MAKE SEQUELS.” they never promised that. What they said was ‘We will not make heartless sequels- story will always come first.’
If we all love and trust Pixar why are we so eager to get our knickers in a twist over the possibility of them making sequels? Why are we so quick to jump to the conclusion that- after all these years- they really must be a soulless corporate-steamed money-press out to shed mediocrity upon the masses?
Toy Story 2 is a great film! Pixar is capable of revisiting a familiar world for a second time to tell another amazing story. Pixar is not out of ideas, as I assure everyone that a place that full of creative talent can never run dry of imagination. Has everyone forgotten about the CONFIRMED original Pixar films we can look forward to? NEWT? The Bear and the Bow?
And just because an idea involves the world of a film we’ve already seen does not mean it’s a bad idea. Think of it this way. Some foods taste better as leftovers. Who is to say certain Pixar worlds can’t be the same?

As long as Pixar Animation Studios and its creative team adheres to this principle for infinite (and beyond), I will never doubt them. And I might add that even “Cars”, which is my least favorite of Pixar’s productions, is a hundred times better than most computer animated films out there, excluding Pixar’s own features….
That said, I agree with pretty much everything Hog-Hog stated. Although I would prefer that Pixar shell out more original work than anything else, I’m willing to give their sequels a shot. “Toy Story 2” was freakin’ awesome, so why would Pixar let us down now?
Marvel, DC, Studio Ghibli… these companies tell stories based in a universe (sort-of) that they have created. Who would say: “No more Gotham stories; we’ve already done that?” -patrick ryan mclaughlin
Well, it looks as if the rumours that Monsters, Inc. 2 is happening seem to get stronger as time goes by.
In a nutshell my stance on Monsters, Inc. 2 is: The Incredibles deserves a sequel WAY more, and also if and when The Increds 2 is released that would make 4 sequels for Pixar, which is too many IMO (though I love Toy Story 2.)
I’d like to see Pixar make more original stories rather than sequels. Every sequel released is taking time and release dates away from original Pixar films.
I think specifically for MI, it’s one of those movies that doesn’t need a sequel. I liked how at the end of the movie there was the assumption that Sulley and Boo continued their relationship with each other until Boo was a little older, or maybe even into adulthood. It’s one of the greatest ever Pixar endings. To have a sequel would sort of ruin it.
However, if Pixar chose to make Monsters, Inc. 2 and they think they’ve got a good idea for it, then that’s their choice and I trust that they are doing it for the right reasons. I’d have to see the sequel to see what my final verdict would be and it would be silly of my to pre-emptively judge a film.
Now Cars 2… that wasn’t as critically well received as most other Pixar films and personally I find the characters to be pretty unappealing. I think a sequel to Cars is being done because of the huge cash cow for merchandising that the movie is. They have a lot to improve on with that movie which could be another reason why they want to make a sequel.
I’d just like to say one more thing….
Here’s how I see it: If, at the end of a film, the words “The End” are displayed on the screen, no sequel(s) of any kind should be created after that, no matter how successful the first film was. It’s the end. Period. We’ve seen all we need to see and nothing has been left out that’s of extreme importance.

– A Bug’s Life – Finding Nemo – Ratatouille
Wow. Look at that. Only three! I could have sworn that there were more…. Well, this goes to show that sequels for both of the “Toy Story” films, “Monsters, Inc.”, “The Incredibles”, “Cars”, and “WALL•E” are acceptable.
That’s just how I see it. That said, I’d still rather see a sequel for some other Pixar film than “Cars” or “Monsters, Inc.”. Oh well. I still trust Pixar, so we’ll see what happens….
I have a feeling Toy Story 3 will have The End on it.

I understand that this is a Pixar fan website, but people should stop looking at just Pixar and saying that there are only going to be sequels, when there are also a number of other animated films in development elsewhere. Particularly as Pixar and Disney are very closely linked these days.
2. It’s going to be an original film, then, 2 sequels, then 2 original and then another sequel and probably another original after that. Unless anything changes in the meantime. It’s not all bad.
I’m not excited about Monsters, Inc2 because the ending was perfect. I am not going to blame Pixar too much if this happens. (Unless there are BAD films)
Aww! Pixar’s becoming a sequel factory! I don’t doubt that these films will be top-notch, but of the six upcoming movies we know about half of them are sequels! After introducing so many new worlds and pushing the boundaries with unusual stories and characters it’s a disappointment to suddenly see so many sequels in such a short span.

that’s just it…it’s just more magical if we DON’T know. a sequel would just take that away. i love that they left the first one for the audience to wonder.
I’m not against sequels at all, I thought that Toy Story 2 was head and shoulders above the amazing original and the potential of an Incredibles sequel makes me all giddy, but Monsters, Inc. is a movie that I feel would be spoiled by a sequel. All the loose ends were wrapped up, the story played out marvelously from beginning to the end and adding any more to this story just feels very excessive. I’m sure if they do go ahead with this Pixar will make something worth watching I just fear that it will spoil the magic of the first.
Really, I don’t understand why there needs to be a Cars 2 or a Monsters Inc 2 or even a Toy Story 3 for that matter. All of those films have pretty much finished their stories and a sequel is just an after thought.
The ONLY current Pixar title that I can see becoming a series of films is The Incredibles, simply because there’s still so much that can be done in that world and with those characters.
I mean, c’mon Pixar, you’re supposed to be better than DreamWorks (even though I would argue that Pete Docter does seem more like a DreamWorks director that a Pixar one, as both of his films play more on gags than emotion)
Pete Docter is amazing and puts just as much care into his films as anyone from Dreamworks. No offense meant to the anonymous above me of course.
Also, I don’t see why there can be a sequal to The Incredibles, but not Cars or even Monsters Inc. There IS so much that can be done in the world of The Incredibles, but also in all the worlds PIXAR creates. Thats how good they are at what they do. A world for monsters, cars, and even bugs has just as much room for more exploration as superheros.
While I don’t think a sequal to Monsters Inc is terrible, I don’t really buy it, only because the Blue Sky DIsney Guy doesn’t even give one source for this claim.
To the second anon above me: Up hasn’t been released yet. Yes, the trailer does seem like it plays on gags, but they show gags in a lot of Pixar films. You haven’t seen Up yet so the only film you can judge Pete Docter as a director on is Monsters, Inc..
