Although Monsters Univeristy isn’t out until June 21, Pixar’s 3D conversion of the original Monsters, Inc. makes its way into theaters next week. In anticipation, Entertainment Weekly has released two new stills from Monsters U, showcasing the rocky roots of Mike and Sulley’s friendship.
Director Dan Scanlon explains, "This is roughly around the time Mike and Sulley meet. […] They’re at a fraternity party, and this is Mike and Sulley getting off on the wrong foot a little bit." Adding on, producer Kori Rae says "They both approach life in different ways. Mike is the go-getter type, anything is possible, and he’s the super-hard worker. Sulley is different because he’s a great scarer, he has this natural ability, but Mike has to work for it."
In a Reddit AMA earlier today, Pete Docter said the film "is turning [out] really well — it looks fantastic and is really funny." Hopefully we’ll get a better peek at the film when the next trailer premieres.

So, wait…what about that line from the first movie where Mike mentions they’ve known each other since the fourth grade? Did they just throw continuity out the window? Did they even watch the first movie again to make sure everything matches up? Or do they just not care? Eeesh. Don’t get me wrong, I’m looking forward to this. Monsters Inc is my favorite movie of all time. But this just seems like a really careless mistake on their part.
I thought of that same thing yesterday! But I can’t remember if they said if Mike and Sully actually meet in college. If that’s not the case, the only thing I can think they could do is have been rivals for years, and then become close friends through the events of the movie.
According to John Lasseter and the MU director, this is EXACTLY what happens. I read this article a while back that discusses it.
