Up Has the Best Reviews of 2009 + Two Golden Tomatoes!

Awards News

Throughout 2009, Up stayed high above the competition with 98% critic approval on the popular review aggregator, Rotten Tomatoes, so it’s no wonder the film went home with two Golden Tomato Awards!

Our favorite studio is certainly no stranger to having their films declared as the best reviewed picks of the year. In fact, this is Pixar’s 6th time achieving Golden Tomato status since the award’s inception! The film’s two wins join the ranks of Pixar’s past Wide Release and Animation category winners. In fact, it directly follows in the footsteps of WALL•E and Ratatouille the last couple of years.

Most animation studio releases have made it clear that 2009 will be known as a banner year for animation. The latest Golden Tomatoes Awards results reinforce that very notion with four films in the Wide Release category being animated features, each representing major techniques in the art form from stop-motion, to hand drawn to CGI animation. Those features include Fantastic Mr. Fox at #3, Coraline at #7 and Ponyo at #9! The same three films (plus Up) are present in that same order for the Animation award with the 5th slot taken by Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs.

Audience reaction also counts in this equation, especially in a site with such heavy (and critical) member participation. The separate votes laid out by Rotten Tomatoes Users ranked Up as the #3 most favored film of 2009 with a 94% approval rating! RT users favorite film of the year happens to be Zombieland followed by Moon, both with 95%.

Check out the rest of the categories and winners at Rotten Tomatoes’ official site for the 11th Annual Golden Tomato Awards! There are some surprises in there, so I recommend you look throughout the entire list.
