Michael Giacchino is unstoppable, and he’s back at work composing for Pixar!
In some unexpected news today, Variety revealed that the renound musician is currently developing the score for Cars 2. Giacchino is a great choice, but a peculiar one because the original 2006 film was composed by another Pixar staple, Randy Newman.
Giacchino gained the spotlight when he provided the score for Brad Bird’s The Incredibles in 2004. Subsequently, he worked with Bird and producer Brad Lewis on Ratatouille. Today, Lewis serves as director on the upcoming sequel to Cars.
If you’re interested in "Mikey G’s" career, you’ll really enjoy Variety’s piece.
Are you surprised by Giacchino’s involvement in Cars 2?

Giacchino is a great choice, I think.
Having a different composer on board will also help differentiate the sequel from the original film.
Giacchino is a great choice, no doubt. But I wish Pixar would get more variety in their choice of composers.
I was hoping Randy Newman would return. But Giacchino makes sense. The film will take place in several areas of the world. I think Giacchino can capture the music of those areas better than Newman.
Yes, Giacchino will definitely be able to showcase the world very well.
Perhaps his relationship with Lewis had something to do with getting the job?
I love Michael Giacchino! I just ordered the 2nd edition of “Lost’s” final season soundtrack yesterday.
I’m surprised by this, but very, very excited. You rock, Michael!
Cool! I’m actually kinda surprised, however, that Up wasn’t listed as one fo Giacchino’s credits! He won an Oscar for that one! 😛
If you want an example of Giacchino’s race music, check out what he did with Speed Racer.
Mike tends to make good listening music-even his theme to the stupid Land of the Lost film was memorable.
Why Pixar keep choosing same composer again and again? Am i the only one that feel bored with Pixar composers’s musics?
David Hirschfelder’s score in LOTG was way way way better than that Randy Newman’s score in Toy Story 3. Even DWA, with its bad story, always came up with a great score. What make HTTYD great is John Powell’s( my fav composer) music and i insist you Pixar, pick John Powell for Brave!!! Brave, which is already great, will be greater and greater if you did that.
Well ,good choice though, i don’t like that must-be-retired Randy Newman music. Michael’s score in Speed Racer was good so i hope he bring some great theme to this movie.
Our house loves Michael Giacchino, we have all of the Pixar sound tracks that he has created. We have some of his other music too. Great Choice!
I’m so happy to hear this!! His work is some of my favorite. I can’t wait for Cars 2 now even more. YES 😀
Michael Giacchino is my favourite composer, but I can’t helped be a little disappointed to hear this. It’s just I really don’t like it went a franchise changes composers, because the new composers almost always seem to shun all the previous thematic work aside from the main theme (Harry Potter is the most notorious for this). I hope this won’t be the case with Cars 2.
I suspect Giacchino was picked because of his great James Bond-ish sound in ‘The Incredibles,’ with that element playing a prominent role in this picture. And clearly, from ‘Ratatouille’ he can do international, along with Mission: Impossible 3. Good choice.
