A brand new Toy Story short film will play in front of Cars 2 theatrically, notes Lee Unkrich in a recent MSN Movies interview.
Today’s huge announcement was sparked by a common question for the TS3 director: Is there a possibility that Toy Story 4 will be produced one day?
Probably not.
With that said, the franchise will continue well into 2011 in other forms. "We have announced we’re going to do a short film in front of ‘Cars 2’ that uses the ‘Toy Story’ characters. We’re going to keep them alive; they’re not going away forever." says Unkrich. No title has been announced.
Earlier this year it was confirmed that vignettes based on the ‘Toy’ series were to be produced at Pixar Canada. Could the theatrical short preceding Cars 2 be the first we see from Toy Story Toons? I guess we’ll find out as we inch closer to Brad Lewis’ directorial debut on June 24th, 2011.
How do you feel about a Toy Story theatrical short?

Well all i can say is that fans must of harassed pixar so bad saying that toy story must never end. That pixar was forced to make shorts now just to stop the fans form forming a angry mob….now the question is will 5 minutes or less be enough to satify their HUNGER????
Hmmm…Well…. Perhaps…. What I’m trying to say is that it just doesn’t seem right for a feature film related short to be in the theatrical version of pixar movie, in this case, cars 2. It’s always been a totally random short, you know? Nothing to do with the movie.Anyway, I’m going to TS3 tonight in a few hours, but I’ve heard nothing about a cars 2 teaser.. Anyone?
Will they replace the regular shorts? I hope not.
I like the idea, but I’d rather they waited a little longer. Especially since it’s being put in front of a sequel. I would prefer an all new short in front of a sequel. They should put a Toy Story short in front of “Brave”.
Two thoughts. There’s got to be a marketing strategy. Toy Story and Cars goods will probably fill half of Toys R Us stores next year. And, if the Toy Story characters aren’t kept alive every year, then the Toy Story character goods will start ending up in landfill.
Doing shorts like this is a good way to keep beloved characters alive without the weight of always having to do a new full-length theatrical feature. I wrote to Brad Bird one time saying that he should do this with the characters from The Incredibles. Who else would like to see Incredibles-based shorts?
Wow, that sounds great! It’s a good way to keep the characters alive now that there probably won’t be any new movies. I just hope it doesn’t replace the regular shorts.
I can’t wait to see the short and the movie! Though i do hope that it has something to do with Bo Peep heh I love Buzz and Jessie but i was really dissapointed that Bo had vanished and Woody didnt seem all that upset! >> That’s also why i think there should be a Toy Story 4 but hey i love Disney movies and i love Pixar ^^
