The Golden Globes were held on the first day of the month, and Pixar was in the running with both its 2020 feature films: Soul and Onward. Weirdly with the pandemic, it feels like the two movies came out in totally different years. Onward was a beautiful swan song to pre-pandemic life, and Soul was a comforting light in the middle of the scary tunnel we’re in right now.
Soul came away with two wins! It won in both its nominated categories: Best Animated Motion Picture, and Best Original Score (Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, and Jon Batiste), where it was contending against several live action movies. We’re always pleased when an animated film is considered alongside other film mediums – especially when it wins. Onward was nominated for Best Animated Motion Picture alongside Soul, Over The Moon, The Croods: A New Age, and Wolfwalkers.
In other Woody’s Round-Up news:
Monsters At Work, a Monsters Inc spin-off being produced by Disney Television Animation for Disney+, is set to start streaming on July 2nd. In an interview with Collider earlier this year, Billy Crystal revealed that production had slowed down slightly due to COVID-19. The series will take place just 6 months after the events of Monsters Inc. Billy Crystal and John Goodman will reprise their roles as Mike and Sulley.
For those of you that don’t have Disney+ and haven’t been able to watch all of Pixar’s excellent SparkShorts, Wind and Float are currently up on Pixar’s YouTube channel for a limited time only. You can watch them below. Both have already accrued over 1 million views each – it’s heartening to see such great, important shorts reaching a wider audience. This is all in support of Asian and Asian American communities:
Last modified: March 2, 2021Pixar Animation Studios and the SparkShorts filmmakers are in solidarity with the Asian and Asian American communities against Anti-Asian hate in all its forms. We are proud of the onscreen representation in these shorts and have decided to make them widely available, in celebration of what stories that feature Asian characters can do to promote inclusion everywhere.
