Box Office Buzz: Toy Story + Toy Story 2 in 3D Opens at #3

Box Office News Toy Story Toy Story 2

Although the double feature won’t by any means be the highest grossing movie of the year, it did pretty great over its opening weekend!

Toy Story and Toy Story 2 in 3D Double Feature raked in an estimated:

$12,500,000

That figure comes from 3 days in about 1,700 theatres throughout the US. Friday brought in $3 million, Saturday added a solid $5 million ending with almost $4 million on Sunday. This means, TS/TS2 has landed in 3rd place for the weekend, just behind Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. So you could say the toys didn’t go to infinity and beyond… but they sure got close!

Let’s put current earnings into perspective. Many of you may be aware that Disney re-issues Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas each Halloween. The highest it’s ever grossed cumulatively in re-release was $14 million; Toy Story almost broke that in 3 days! That can only be a good sign.

With most theatres only playing about 3 show times, it’s not like anyone expects this to be the next big blockbuster but Toy Story and Toy Story 2 in 3D sure is doing well! The double feature will be in release for 11 more days, I wonder how much more it can make in that mega-limited time frame…
