Randy Newman not short on ideas

News Pixar

I’m sure you have all heard of him or at least heard him play. Yes I am talking about the great singer/songwriter Randy Newman. He has been in the business for 43 years and “you’d think the process would be second nature by now” says this article from The Houston Chronicle. Apparently not according to Randy.

Newman is taking “a break in the battle” of trying to finish his latest soundtrack, for the upcoming Pixar cartoon Cars (due out next June). So he sits at his piano, idly playing the occasional flourish in the background as he talks…..
…..One of his regular live set pieces is You’ve Got a Friend in Me, the theme to the 1995 Disney cartoon Toy Story and a straightforwardly sentimental song. He’ll generally follow it up with a post-song comment: “You realize, of course, that that’s total [bull excrement].”
says the article

Newman thought that he wouldn’t win the Acadmey Award, well thats not entirely true, he thought he may have a chance with ‘The Natural’ or some of the ‘Toy Story’ stuff. Randy won the Academy Award for ‘If I Didn’t Have You’ which featured in ‘Monsters Inc.’.

Newman pauses to play a few notes on his piano.

“Say,” he says, “that’s not a bad idea for a song. Maybe I’ll do that one, but put a little better than I did just now. We’ll see.”
