Planes; Second Toy Story Short: Details Revealed!

Cars 2 News Short Film Toy Story

New light has been shed on two relatively obscure projects (linked to Pixar) at this year’s Disney Investors Conference, held today in Anaheim, CA.

We begin with Planes, the rumored feature that generated negative buzz in the middle of 2010. The film has been confirmed for a Spring 2013 Blu-ray release, however it will not be a Pixar production. From the official press release:

"Planes takes off with an international cast of the fastest air racers around, in a comedy packed with action and adventure starring Dusty, a small town dreamer who longs to enter the most epic around-the-world air race … despite his fear of heights. With the help and support of a fleet of new and hilarious characters, Dusty wings his way into the biggest challenge of his life."

As mentioned earlier, Planes is not a Pixar production, instead, DisneyToon Studios is behind the film. Technically, I wouldn’t even consider it part of the Cars franchise. As the press release puts it, it is just "inspired" by the Pixar universe. Think of it as a parallel to Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins.

The next project, teased at via Tom Hanks’ recent tweet, is an official Pixar production. New details reveal that the second Toy Story short will be released with Disney’s The Muppets when it hits theaters on November 23, 2011.

The first of the "Toy Story Toons" series of short films, Hawaiian Vacation, was previewed today at the conference and will be released this summer in front of Cars 2. Look out for more details on this project (and much more!) soon.
