Detroit Film Critics Name Up Best Picture of the Year!

Posted by Upcoming Pixar • December 20, 2009

Detroit loves Up! At least, according to the Detroit Film Critics Society which named Pixar’s 10th as their best of 2009!

In the Best Picture category, Up won against the following big-time Oscar buzz generating films: (500) Days of Summer, The Hurt Locker, Inglorious Basterds and Up in the Air. Pete Docter also went home with Best Director for Up, competing against each helmer of the aforementioned films.

With Up landing Best Animated in a bunch of this year’s other critic awards, it’s refreshing to see the highest honor bestowed upon Pixar’s latest in the Michigan-based awards. What’s strange is that the DFCS Awards doesn’t appear to have a Best Animated Feature award, not that it needs one. Anyway, you can see the rest of the DFCS winners here.

Here’s hoping the Academy recognize Up as the DFCS has, or if anything else, allows for a Best Picture nomination. But for now, congratulations, Pete Docter and co. on another momentous win!

Pixar Oscar Hopes Expand with Best Picture Category

Academy Awards

Posted by Upcoming Pixar • June 24, 2009

Fans of Up now have lifted hopes for the film’s chances at an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.

The Motion Picture Academy has decided to return to including ten nominees in the most coveted category at the 82nd annual ceremony in 2010 for the first time since 1943.  "There were 10 best pic noms for most of the Academy Awards’ first decade.  In 1935 there was a bumper crop of 12 nominees."

The decision comes into response to controversy that many deserving films are shut out from even competing in the category like high grossing action flicks and of course animated films which have their own Best Animated Feature category.  Only one animated film, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast in 1992, has ever been nominated for Best Picture, and that was nearly a decade prior to the birth of the animation category.

The recent critical and box office success of animated films, particularly from Pixar, as well as major action films like last year’s The Dark Knight have many in the industry believing these films can compete in the category. The Academy hopes the change will make that possible. The new rule should have a particularly significant impact this year as no early front runners have emerged on scene as awards season approaches.

Note: Nominees for the 82nd Annual Academy Awards will be announced on February 2nd, 2010. Watch the ceremony live from Hollywood on March 7th, 2010!

The answer lies up in the stratosphere, where cloud people sculpt babies from clouds and bring them to life. Gus, a lonely and insecure grey cloud, is a master at creating "Dangerous" Babies, Crocodiles, Porcupines, Rams and more – Gus’s beloved creation is a work of art, but more than a handful for his loyal delivery Stork partner, Peck. As Gus’s creations become more and more rambunctious, Peck’s job gets harder and harder. How will Peck manage to handle both his hazardous cargo and his friend’s fiery treatment?"

Pixar’s classic tales A Bug’s Life (1998) and Monsters, Inc. (2001) will be released back-to-back on Blu-ray presumably in Spring of this year.

The long circulating rumor has now been confirmed by Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment in an announcement of their future releases from February to October of this new year. Monsters and ABL will both include a digital copy for viewing on an iPod and will likely feature some sort of new content. An announcement featuring specific details on the two afformentioned releases are expected late this Winter. What a great marketing strategy, think about it: Disney•Pixar’s Up, from the director of Monsters, Inc. (now on Blu-ray)!
Unfortunately, there was no announcement of the long awaited Finding Nemo Blu-ray which has had changing release dates for the past year or two.

Speaking of Blu-rays, IGN has named WALL•E the best BD of the year! Read what they had to say here.
